Each episode is basically its own movie, hence only 3 episodes a year.

This is an intelligently made series which should set the bar for all other tv. Not freaking Two and a Half Douches.

I've always thought it was interesting that most shows in America have been designed to go on forever, or at least as long as they possibly can, so they can make as much money as possible off of the same idea, actors, and sets. The problem with that philosophy is that we can all name numerous shows that kept going long after they'd lost track of what made them so good in the first place. They run out of good ideas and stories for the characters, and start resorting to mediocre ideas, and the show dies a slow and painful death. Seems like the better shows tend to be shorter, and have a better idea from the beginning what they're going to cover and how they want to end.

Can the third ep of season 2 be better than the first ep? It's simply not possible.

Oh, it's possible. I thought it was.

I love this show. To bad there are so few episodes, but every episode is gold.

I also like Jekyll a lot. James Nesbitt was great. These british shows are amazing.

Watched this on Netflix a while back. I did not expect much but it was surprisingly good. Way better than that crap with Robert Downing Jr. Those movies were anything but Sherlock Holmes. For those of you that like Sherlock Holmes check out the Case Book of Sherlock Homes and the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes , those were the best depictions of Holmes that I have seen.

I believe those were on Netflix as well.

So I just finished the final episode - while it was very WTFish, it still didn't beat the 1st episode of the 2nd season for me.

Anyone know of other series like this? Shows that are only 3 episodes per season but are rich in quality? I've heard Jekyll is one but I'm looking for others too. What else does British television have similar to this?

BBC's "Luther" starring Idris Elba has a very similar format (6 episodes in season 1, 4 in the 2nd) and style. If you like "Sherlock" I highly recommend it.

What's interesting is in the original Holmes story, he falls to his "death" but you don't see the body. They've upped the ante with this version.

Luther, Prime Suspect, Downton Abbey, Horatio Hornblower, Sharpe

Luther is solid. Not as good as Sherlock, but definitely worth watching.

I stopped watching when they wrote off Ruth. :/

She's such a good foil to Luther.

American mass audiences like the idea of missing an episode or two, then watching the newest one without needing to look back at the ones they missed.

Then again America has been stuck with Jay Leno for the last decade or so...

    What?

It's not like you need to watch a particular episode of Sherlock to understand a different episode of Sherlock.

That's true. If one British episode were to be broken up into three 40 minute episodes, then it would matter. In this case, it's more about syndication rights than long arcs.

I mixed that up because they're related issues but different.

During the filler before the trailers of Dark Knight Rises, they did a 5 minute plus segment about CBS' Elementary. Lucy Liu plays Joan Watson and there was many a scene of Sherlock with his shirt off

I know what you mean. She's not going to be in the third season as well. It's stupid.

Not to bad for both actors.

"Watson" landed the lead role of Bilbo Baggins

"Sherlock" landed a major role in the new Star Trek flick

These guys do a awesome job in this show, glad to see them moving up

Excellent! Will watch at least half a dozen times like I have the previous seasons.

^ They're actually both in the Hobbit -
    Sherlock voices Smaug I believe
. Not too shabby at all
