For people like this, in addition to criminal charges for murder, IMO they should make sure he is never able to have children again. That's the kind of sentence we need to start dishing out. Generally speaking, we also need to start enforcing minimum standards of education and resources for those who want to raise children. We need to start teaching college kids about the situation with regard to children in the world, the associated costs/sacrifices and the required level of competence to raise a child. In the case of children, who can't defend themselves, we have to look at ourselves and be honest about whether we have been fair in guaranteeing their protection from poor parenting. We need to start neutering people who cross a line. I'm not sure where the line is, but I'm sure the guy in the article crossed it.
I hate to admit but I LoL'ed at this part I don't think I've seen that many "K's since Nolan Ryan was pitching. Back on serious topic. If this was the US I would agree that this guy should have his parental rights stripped and as for keeping him from having future children I think he certainly never should be allowed to adopt but I am curious what you, Mathloom had in mind? Castration? Any women that would have a child with him knowing his history is probably has some other problems. Since this is Pakistan though I would need to know more about if this has anything to do with tribal traditions or if this is just an abberant case about what to do about it. I am all for education of parents and I think that is something we need to do more in the US. I don't know how things like this are handled in Pakistan.
Wait - so if it "has anything to do with tribal traditions" - then what? Then you would say it's ok? Can you specify how the answer to that question would impact your suggested handling of the crime?
Well, if they don't give him life in prison, I hope they at least sterilize him so he can't do it to his next child, too.
Oh if its tribal then its all good! I'm saying if it is a tribal tradition then something needs to be changed with that tribe. If it is just one aberrant individual then we address it on that basis. For that matter then is there tribal justice that handles this?
You know, when Malthus basically stated that the poor shouldn't be allowed to breed because of the overpopulation problem, at least he didn't cloak it in "THINK OF THE CHILDREN." I mean, sure, I guess you could neuter the b*stard( though I'd rather shoot him), but geez Mathloon, everything else is just ludicrous. Does the nation have the right to determine who has a child and who doesn't? Seriously? That's like one of Hightop's strawmen right there.
It's not a blanket punishment. The nation isn't allowed to consider it in every instance, only in specific and extreme instances. We have to account for the fact that when a mother and father are deciding to have a child, for the next 18 years and nine months the kid can not say "**** NO, NOT THESE ABUSIVE MORONS!" I don't consider neutering a big deal when children are in danger. I'm not that moved by someone sobbing over the fact that it's their right to have children regardless of how they raise/treat that child. Someone independent has to be responsible for ensuring protection of children. That's an appropriately skilled and experienced group of people chosen by the nation in specific and extreme circumstances. Not everything has to be on one extreme or the other.
As a father of 3 beautiful girls, and a handsome son, this story brought tears to my eyes. Chemical castration and life in prison.
There should not be tribal justice, at all. Coupled with the way the thread starter's question was phrased, your sentence sounded like you would see different "appropriate justice" depending on whether there is a tribal background or not. That something would have to change within that tribe is a separate issue from what would be appropriate justice.
I suspect tribal justice would actually be much harsher than what the Pakistan justice system would dish out but my question was more about intellectual curiosity. Not everything is about an argument. That is because you read into it something that wasn't stated and jumped to a conclusion. Not at all. I am saying is that if this was tribal custom then that is an issue that needs to be addressed in regard to justice for this little girl.
I don't know about this guy, but there are people are so deprived in moral due their upbringing and/or neurological condition, their acts are beyond the conscience of you and I. I have heard aboutworse thing, which I don't want share here. This world is not as this world appears, deep down, there are too many crooked souls.
