I just don't understand if WE have all the assets Orlando wants that WE just don't deal with them directly. Screw LA. Why should we help them get Howard?

Personally, I think Morey still is pushing for Howard directly with Orlando and Bynum may be a plan B.

Just don't understand why we would give up everything for LA to get the gold medal and we get the silver.

There would obviously be no deal if we don't land Dwight or Bynum

    We are.

    Houston has set the bar.

Orlando is now trying to shop around and find a better deal.

    Same as it ever was.

OK. So if we look back in the history of the league, we shouldn't be able to find examples of superstars who didn't win rings. Because, dammit, if you want it BADLY enough, you can make it happen no matter who's around you, right? The reason Barkley and Malone and Stockton, Artis Gilmore, Pistol Pete, Dominique Wilkins, and Patrick Ewing don't have rings is because they weren't trying hard enough.

And it's a coincidence that KG, Pierce, and Allen didn't win until they got together in Boston. It's a coincidence that Lebron and Bosh didn't win until they joined Wade in Miami. It's a coincidence that Shaq didn't win until he played with Kobe, and that Kobe didn't win in the years between Shaq and Gasol. You and I both know that weren't winning until they 'drove themselves and others around them to win', not because they played on crappy teams.

It's almost like even the GOAT couldn't will an inferior team to victory.

Other than his six All-Star appearances, his five NBA First Team appearances, his three DPOYS, his Olympic Gold Medal, and his status as the consensus best center in the league, you're right - he hasn't proven squat. What we need is a winner like Juwon Howard. After all, he's got a ring.

    We're not giving "everything up".

We're just in a stupid bidding war with Cleveland now on who gets Bynum.

if we get dwight and he doesnt want to resign after the season and hes actually open to LA we could always s&t d12 for bynum

it really sets up perfectly... get dwight.. if it doesnt mesh HOU/LAL can do the s&t.. dwight gets his money, bynum gets his money.

Because Howard is willing to extend with LA and will probably try to leverage his free agency to get traded at the deadline. (Whether it will work, or the Rockets successfully call his bluff would be the gamble.) Bynum, on the other hand, would almost certainly sign an extension with the Rockets & be happy to be here.

That said, I go back and forth. I would much rather have Howard the player, moreso now that I've learned more about Bynum's knee condition. It's a question of percentages, I guess. What is the percentage chance Bynum's knees knock him out in the next couple seasons, and what is the percentage chance Howard signs? What are the respective rewards of each positive outcome?

SnT doesn't work that way anymore, so actually neither of them would get their money. Might be a gamble worth taking though. :)

You know it's funny when the offseason got underway, majority of CF was calling for Morey's head when he let Dragic and Scola go, and traded away Lowry, Budinger, Camby and Dally. With all the moves that Morey made a few weeks ago has pretty much assured us either A) Dwight, B) Bynum, or C) Rebuild with our current roster/Picks.

But you're so right dude... there's no way Morey gives up his prized assets and picks, takes back garbage contracts from ORL, and not get back either Dwight or Bynum.

I keep saying it...Morey is, and always was in the drivers seat through the Dwightmare. And Stern canceling the trade from last year seems to be a blessing in disguise at this point... i think i'd rather take my chances with Lin/Lamb/Dwight or Bynum rather than Lowry/Nene/Pau

    I agree...

Which then makes me scratch my head at Orlando because they aren't gonna find a better deal than what we have to offer.

I don't really think they are shopping around looking for a better deal, I think they are waiting to sew what deal we can actually make after the Asik situation is resolved.

There is another option - stick with what we have and use our multiple lottery picks next year to complete our team; with room to spare for a max contract or two.

I'm not back and forth because of the money to begin with. Dwight is worth every penny of a Max deal even with the potential of his back being bad.

Bynum? No. His attitude, work ethic and health risks are not worth a Max contract. Could he get a max deal? yes but I hope Morey doesn't give up any promising rookie for him.

I agree that Dwight is worth max money. Definitely more valuable than Bosh or Pao, in my opinon. However the idea of receiving a disgruntled max-contract player with a bad back from Orlando has me a little gun-shy for some reason.

It's not about what we can offer, it's what we're willing to offer. Hennigan is trying to look for better offers out there because the one Morey is likely offering is not close in value for D12. If we were willing to part with Lamb, White, Parsons, Patterson, Martin and a pick, Howard would have been a Rocket for some time now. We're lowballing, and that's why Orlando is taking their time.

In the end, I'd think (and sincerely hope) Orlando crawls back to us and gives us Dwight. I'm also not sold on the fact that we're pursuing Bynum. It wasn't the case a few weeks ago when it was being reported we were negotiating directly with Orlando, and not LA. Remember, part of building a contending team is not facilitating a superstar to another team in which you cannot beat.

If Morey wanted to "ride it out' with the rookies he would have signed the rookies by now.

I still don't think he will ever go the C route purposefully.

Meaning, if C was really an option, the Lin and Asik signing don't make sense, because they help you tread water, which is not what you want to do initially in a rebuild. You need to be really bad to get great picks, and frankly trade away competent players for cap space and other teams picks.

Morey is/was stuck because a big trade is still a possibility and he needs talent around whomever he acquires, so had to make the offers.

But more than that, even if he doesn't land Dwight or Bynum, I belive DM continues to pursue a trade of that or similar magnitude. That's what he wants picks for, not necessarily to use for the team itself. That isn't to say he may continue to strike out on that type of trade, and ultimately be "forced" into a classic draft style rebuild, but it will happen by virtue of not being able to do something else.

And while there's nothing wrong with that per say, I think there are some risks inherent in not having that as a direct strategy. Are the Nets currently championship caliber? No. But they went from god awful to clear playoff team because they had a very clear and specific strategy. Which was different from the Thunder strategy, but again the Thunder had a very clear and specific strategy. Both strategies involved some luck. Nets had to convince Deron to stay despite the team being crappy. The Thunder not only had to shrewdly trade for picks, but had to trade for the right picks in the right drafts and make the right selections.

My concern about Morey's approach, which doesn't include a full rebuild as a direct specific strategy they are going to go after immediately is it could lead to continued mediocrity.

I think Lin and Asik are overrated by many on this board, as are a number of our rookies - they may all be great, but still big question marks. But even I can concede that it could work to an extent, that extent being once again being a slightly below average team with a pick in the late lotto.

    Anyways, just some thoughts...
