How much upside do people think he has left? I don't think a 26 year old moving away from the best defensive coach in basketball get appreciably better.

I don't see the offensive potential.

The Rocket's brain trust obviously thinks Asik has a huge upside. Seeing the little available video on him, he really hustles, rebounds aggressively, and moves well for a big guy. Doesn't seem to have an offensive game, but maybe that can be developed.

Camby was a lot better than Asik.

You may not realize it, but Camby is still one of the best rebounders and shot blockers in the game today. We'll pull up their per 36 numbers:

    Asik 7.6pts/13reb/2.5blocks
    Camby 7.6pts/14reb/2.3 blocks

Of course, that includes where he did basically quit on Portland, in Houston he did:

    10.6pts/13.8reb/2.3blocks/0.8TO

    Ortg = 115 Drtg = 97 for us.

Do you know Marcus Camby led the NBA in Rebounding percentage for the last 2 years?

Do you know Asik's turnover rate was 25.2%?

Brick hands. He takes easy dunks and turns them into turnovers.

Let's compare their numbers at the end of this year (and the 2 years after that) and see who was the better sign.

Camby's upside is sort of, er, limited? It's a known known.

Asik's upside is something we are going to find out about. It's an unknown known.

of course Camby is better, he won't last in the league for more than a decade..but, he is already way past his prime, we are gambling with Asik, who still have an upside

Pretty sure you can see my post to the original question was, going forward, pretty up in the air. Looking back at the last 2 years? It is Camby.

Camby will be a horrible sign for trading so much to get him, but I'd happily make you a bet that barring injury to either one, Camby is the better contract value.

It doesn't exist. He is 26 and been in the league for 2 years. The upside is he is who he is even with meaningful minutes.

    DMo is an unkown.

Has anyone seen a cap update including Lin and Asik?

If we get Dwight or Bynum, yes, Camby would've been a better value short-term. If we don't, Asik is absolutely the better move. However, even if we do get Dwight or Bynum, Asik is by no means not a smart sign. With Asik, you're doing two things, preparing for a worst case scenario, and paying for potential. If he turns into a more expensive insurance policy, I have no problems with that, because it will mean we landed the big fish we were after.

to be fair, centers/big men usually hit their peaks at around 30 years of age (see hakeem)

Trading Camby was the right decision. I think picking up Asik was the wrong one. I'd just assume go into the season with Jordan as our starting center based on potential. Of course Jordan is now on the waiver wire.

Camby still can rebound and is effective protecting the rim, but as old as he is, logically has lost a step and often shows late for the helps, not to mention his p&r defense, where Asik's feet offer a much better level. Also better at 1on1 D.

Hakeem was an exception as he hit his peak after turning 30. Most centers start a downward trend after 30.

true....camby would have been a good piece, for a contending team, but since we're pseudo rebuilding, might as well go young

Camby is an old man though..he won't last the whole season and his minutes have to be limited or he'll get injured for sure halfway through the season

Asik is 25 and getting better. Camby is 38. We are trying to build something, not just stay afloat. Your per 36 minute numbers made me feel even better about signing Asik. Thanks.

Again, what do we lose by signing Asik? Quit complaining.

you want an old guy that reached his potential long ago, or a person with a future to up his game with some very good potential to grow with our young guys?
