You do realize we were loaded with point guards at the time, right?

The 1984 Portland Trail Blazers were loaded with shooting guards, so they drafted Sam Bowie instead of that Tar Heel kid.

    DAMN YOU HINDSIGHT!! *glug*

I like it too...Really, really want to keep all of the young players along with Lin and Asik(if Chicago doesn't match). On the slim chance they can add Dwight on the cheap after all the other bidders possibly drop out would be great but personally I prefer to keep our young guys. Let them play and gain experience. Add in a possible top 5 draft pick next year and things could really get exciting.

Yes, they are correlated. Winning in the NBA is about true stars. Every legit star drafted this century - LeBron, Wade, Durant, Howard, Westbrook, Rose, Carmelo, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Kevin Love - has been a top 5 choice. Every one of them. Every championship team, save the '04 Pistons, has been led by at least one player of elite caliber.

OKC knew that with three top 5 picks, they had potential for at least one to be a franchise guy. The percentages show that it's extremely unlikely from where the Rockets drafted. If you can flip a package of non-star players for a legit star, you do it every single time in the NBA. OKC kept their trio because the scouting reports and history had those guys pegged as superstar-caliber players. The scenario here isn't even comparable.

How does that equate to winning games? Dragic 25 games is far more impressive than lin 25 games plus he thrived under mchale as a starter.

Considering the options available to us, I'd say the marquee move now would be to try to sign RFA Javale McGee. I know, I know, [flame suit on; can't wait for the "I'm glad you aren't the GM" hits], we don't need knuckleheads; but he's only 24, long, athletic, healthy, and maybe he'll develop under McHale's tutelage. Either that, or we trade him for picks at the deadline.

That wold be a high risk strategy for Lee. The longer this thing draws out, the more likely interested teams will fill their needs elsewhere. If Dwight doesn't come here, Lee could very well end up with a lesser contract than he would have gotten had he looked out for himself from the start.

Since Rockets have the ability to absorb contracts, they shouldn't give away their young promising rookies such as Lamb, White and Motiejuvus. I will give Orlando 1st round from Toronto, a future 1st round top 10 protected, Kevin Martin and one of the promising rookies like Jones. In return, we absorb their heavy contracts excluding Hedo. If they want to include Hedo, then they have to negate one of the picks.

Let's be real: Dwight Howard has mentioned being motivated by the opportunity to become a global brand. Lin and the China connection is something that Howard would have to consider when deciding if Houston is where he wants to re-sign vs. leaving $30 million plus on the table. You can't say that Howard would give the same consideration with Dragic.

Judging by Les' comments, his thoughts are that the appeal of playing with Jeremy Lin will bring star players to Houston when they would otherwise go elsewhere. That's how it equates to winning games. Not saying I agree, just analyzing on Les' thought process.

So why did they offer the same contract to Dragic first?

    Look beyond the spin.

Absolutely. That's why I don't think the Rockets-Magic negotiations will go on forever. My guess is everyone is waiting on the Asik situation to wrap up. Even though the Rockets may not need the Asik cap space to swing a Howard deal, it likely impacts the negotiations. That is, the Rockets could save a prospect and/or pick if they were able to use Asik's cap space to take on a second bad Orlando contract. (Or give the Magic multiple options.)

My hunch is that once the Asik situation is completed (Monday?), the Rockets will make a very hard push to get a Howard or Bynum deal completed (with Morey having the Lee situation in the back of his mind). If it doesn't work, Lee will definitely go elsewhere because as you said, at some point it gets too risky for him. But I think Lee's trying to stall as long as he reasonably can to give the Rockets a chance to pull off a deal. The middle of next week is probably safe enough for him.

Because Lin looked to be untouchable. For all we know, Les & Morey knew the offer to Dragic was unacceptable and did it to save face.
