How much is Howard's cap hold for next offseason?

Aha. I also wanted to know what do you think about a situation where Lin is finally coming. Next step: going for Asik or Howard new try? If we get Asik we are practically saying goodbye to the possibility of adding a max contract next to Howard. On the other hand, Asik it would be something you have assured for the case of a Howard escape.
    Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Bynum and Paul in the same boat regarding their contract extensions? Both stand to make more if they sign next off-season. It's something to the tune of 60M 3 years vs 100m 5 years.

If it's true, wouldn't it be more SOP with players of their caliber to wait it out for max $$ rather than trepidation to re-sign with their current teams?

$20,513,178. That is also the maximum salary Howard can receive (105% of his 2012-13 salary) and will most likely be his starting salary on his next contract (either with Houston or another team with tons of cap room).

Regardless of what the Knicks decide tonight on Lin, the next step is to sign Asik to his offer sheet. The reason for waiting this long is that the Rockets would prefer to use the same cap space they're using now on Lin in order to sign Asik. If the Knicks do not match on Lin (meaning that he officially becomes a Rockets can counts $8.37M on their cap), the Rockets will likely have to officially renounce Dragic's right (to clear his cap hold off the books) and waive one minimum non-guaranteed player (Josh Harrellson?) in order to create the additional cap space with which to sign Asik to his offer sheet.

Adding all of Lin, Asik and Howard would make it very difficult to create max cap space for a second player on top of Dwight. Still, it's not outside the realm of possibility that Lin or Asik could be moved in trade next summer, although it would be pretty tricky to pull off.

It's all about injury risk. For guys who want extensions that go into effect with a NEW team (via trade or S&T), the extensions are much shorter and/or not available. In Bynum's and Paul's cases, they could still get max money for several years with an extension with their current clubs. However, I can see the benefit to maximizing their total contract value. They just better hope they don't suffer a major injury in the next 12 months.

    Thanks very much Mr. Frusciante.
If we get both FAs we could start operating with ESPN trade machine and OKC / Clippers.

Bima, as far as I know, Goran Dragic has yet to sign the contract offer from the Suns. If Lin is matched, is there a way to sign Goran to the same offer made to Lin which, while 3 years, is close to $1 million more per season than the Suns have offered, and fit him into the Asik/Howard scheme? Sure, he would be shafting the Suns, and it's highly unlikely that this would happen, but it's been a weird off-season so far. He might be tempted by playing with his brother, who has had a nice run in summer league, and could be earning a spot with the team. I've been curious about this possible scenario.

Suffocation. Jack and Jill are fish, and the glass and water are from their fishbowl.

That's actually in Larry Coon's Salary Cap FAQs, too! :p

Let it go. The Dragic ship has sailed. Don't see either Dragic or the Rockets burning those kinds of bridges.

OK, but I'm still curious if it would work. Agree that it's extremely unlikely. The chaos must be getting to me! ;-)-

If he hasn't signed anything he could do it but it would be incredibly bad form and the agent would risk alienating himself from the organization and hurting his position with future free agent negotiations.

Absolutely! I don't disagree a bit that it would put the organization, and Dragic (and his agent) in a very bad light. I have to confess, however, that I'm wondering what the hell we'll do for a point if the Lin deal is matched. Anybody see a 1 on the horizon that isn't a rookie and is worth a damn, now that Brooks has signed with the Kings? If one's around, his name has slipped my mind.

Considering Morey's track record on finding backup points that are just waiting to break out, Im honestly not that worried about that. Did any of us have Lowry or Dragic on our radars before the Rockets got them? Very few of us IM sure.

I think this is an excellent point, and it's why I'd choose Asik over Lin, because young healthy high motor rim protectors are simply more difficult to acquire than point guards are.

I know he's done a fantastic job getting us excellent point guards on excellent deals, but I'm still nervous, and still wondering who's out there.

Oh, and Machado is a rookie in summer league. A terrific backup, possibly (looks like it right now), but still a rook in summer league.

    Bima,

Would the structure of building room for Josh Smith be any different than for CP3 if we got all of Lin, Asik, and Howard?

So do we expect the Asik matching/not matching time to be quicker assuming we don't drop a bomb on Chi like we did NY? I don't know if i can handle another 3 day waiting period.

Nope. Would still be VERY difficult.

Howard, Lin and Asik would take up over $37-38M in cap room for just those three players. Add to that the amounts of any ORL contracts the Rockets are taking back in a Howard trade, and I think their chances of adding another max player (besides Howard) next summer are not good.
