He dont want to sign extension with Rockets if he is traded here, If we trade for him we will have to trade our young talent for him plus picks. And he become FA in next summer. so if he signs somewhere else then we loose him and our picks and young talent. so we loose from every end. so i think its better to Play and develop our Young Talents and start building our team.

I can see a defensive big like Asik working well with more offensively oriented PFs like D-Mo or White in the frontcourt.

We are playing ridiculous off court game against other NBA teams. I can't see short time effect, but for a long run, it will hurt the franchise. No one in the league would like to deal with it.

Says Himself, he has made it clear that he would sign extension only with Nets. and recently he even said if he is not traded he is prepared to sit out entire season.

    Link?

This is the only quote I can find. (comes from a crappy Yahoo blog)

    That only says the following:

    1) There's one team I want to be traded to.

    2) If I don't get traded there, I won't sign an extension until I've had a chance to explore free agency.

That only says he isn't willing to sign an extension, that doesn't mean he won't re-sign with anybody else.

Signing an extension would cost him money, IIRC, getting him to re-sign with his Bird Rights team is what we're after.

He would lose millions of dollars if he signs an extension with ANY team...its in his best interest to be a free agent...and then its in his best interest to sign with the team that has his Bird rights.

And if he doesnt care about his Bird rights, is it worth it to lose tens of millions of dollars to go play for teams that are in no better shape than the Rockets?

There is a chance he could leave the Rockets...but there is a much, much greater chance that he will resign with the Rockets.

From the reports, he said he would only guarantee an extension with Nets. Big difference. The last part, I've not heard, but would pertain to Magic and not the Rockets.

    This.

Dwight and his agent realize that he needs to be TRADED to a big market team (i.e., New York or Los Angeles) if he wants to get a huge raise on his shoe contract, which pays him more than his NBA contract.

Sadly for Dwight, once the Rockets acquire him, that dream is OVER.

The Knicks, Nets, Lakers, Clippers and even the Chicago Bulls are all capped out for the foreseeable future. No "big market team" will be able to come anywhere close to being able to afford Howard in free agency.

Therefore, Dwight will have to choose, most likely, among the following options in 2013 free agency:

    --Return to his home-town market of Atlanta and (maybe) play with his buddy Josh Smith, who himself will be a free agent next summer, even though Dwight has indicated before that he has little desire to play in Atlanta;

--Go to Dallas to play for "sexy owner" Marc Cuban, even though the roster will have little more than an aging Dirk Nowitzki, O.J. Mayo and some below-average youngsters; or

--Re-sign with Houston, play with some better young talent than in Dallas or Atlanta, play with a team that either has "marketing opportunity magnet" Jeremy Lin OR the cap room available to make a legit run at Chris Paul (or BOTH), and (most importantly) . . . make $30 million more than he could possibly make playing anywhere else.

While I still fear the possibility of him bolting to Dallas or Atlanta (we've seen already that Dwight doesn't always make the seemingly-obvious correct decision), the odds--and the MONEY--dictate that Houston is the single most likely destination for Dwight Howard for the 2013-14 season and beyond . . . IF the Rockets are able to trade for him at some point between now and the February 2013 trade deadline.

And if he says, "Yeah, but will you actually be able to get CP3?"

They can reply, "Look how long and hard we chased you."

I can't think even the Clippers are cheap enough to let this happen. Paul wants big money as much as Dwight and is in a city of preference. Unless the Rockets can trade for him by the deadline, I don't think this happens.

    Bima -

How "sexy" is Marc Cuban under the new CBA? While he might have been willing to dramatically overspend and take on the luxury tax under the prior CBA, he doesn't seem as willing now. Post championship, he let Tyson Chandler go, purely for cost reasons.

I do think that NBA players will continue to percieve Cuban positively b/c he is young, cool, and brash, and honestly quite different from virtually every other NBA owner. But the days of Cuban ignoring the luxury tax are seemingly over.

True, just like the Rockets would be able to offer Howard ~$30 million more than any other team, so, too, could the Clippers offer more money to Chris Paul than any other team.

How-EVAH . . . Paul has been reluctant to sign a max extension with the Clippers thus far, which would extend him out until 2016. This is a far cry from the one- or two-year extensions that Dwight could have signed with another team last season had he not opted in to his contract with Orlando. While Paul's reluctance to sign an extension could possibly be traced to his desire to wait to hit free agency then sign a deal locking him up through 2018, I (as well as most of the media) believe it has more to do with Paul wanting to first see what Donald Sterling and [Clippers GM TBD] can do to make the Clippers into a championship team.

Quite frankly, even though Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan are electrifying and exciting players, they are not necessarily a championship-caliber frontcourt if all the Clippers' money is tied up in just those two and Paul. Griffin has had injury problems, and more importantly, Paul has had to bail that Clippers team out down the stretch in WAYYY too many games last season.

Meanwhile, the Rockets could be sitting there with Dwight Howard (a true superstar in name AND IN GAME), a nice supporting cast of young talent still stuck on their rookie contracts, AND max cap room.

Just like Howard and Deron Williams were both seemingly willing to potentially take a pay cut to join forces in Dallas with Dirk Nowitzki (before Dwight opted in), Paul might be willing to leave some money on the table with the Clippers in order to pursue legit title hopes in Houston.

I'm certainly not saying that it's LIKELY. But it's a distinct and legitimate possibility.

Actually, Cuban didn't let Chandler and Barrea go last summer just to cut costs.

It was for the express purpose of preserving cap space for Deron Williams and Dwight Howard. It's been no secret in league circles that this had been his plan all along. It took a major hit when Dwight opted in (which Cuban couldn't possibly have known was going to happen when he let Chandler walk) and then got crushed when Deron opted for more money and the bright lights of New York over Dallas this month.

Even though it defies most logic, I still think Dwight may be susceptible to Cuban's siren song.

I respect ur opinion but lets not get carried away. As of this moment we still don't even have howard let alone raising up the possibilities of CP3 next season. 1st thing is 1st.....trade for howard then figure out what to do next. Until we actually have Howard in a Rockets uniform with the extension signed it is really a moot point to be bringing up CP3.

Of course, this all assumed that the Rockets are able to pull off a Howard trade in the first place. The entire context for the post was in response to someone asking how the Rockets could RETAIN Howard next summer.

And I don't think Dwight will be signing an extension anytime soon. Even if he signed an extension with the Rockets, it wouldn't be for another 6 months at the earliest, since that is when he can first sign a long(ish)-term extension once he is traded.

Regardless, one of the VERY FIRST things the Rockets will do, if they are able to acquire Howard and have anywhere close the the cap flexibility, will be to convince Howard that the Rockets will do everything in their power to make a run at Chris Paul next summer, giving Howard the elite PG he so desperately wanted in Deron Williams.

With Asik + Lin contacts... how? Sign&trade? -obviously not enough cap space-.

Sorry. Assuming we don't get both Lin and Asik.

If the Rockets get Lin, they'll probably try to sell Howard on the marketability offered by a Rockets team featuring Lin. Depending on what other moves are made, they STILL might be able to make a run at CP3, even with ONE of Lin or Asik on the roster.
