The Suns put in a $13.5 million bid on Scola for three years, which covers half of what we owe him. That's actually a pretty large bid and saves Les some money.
it doesn't save much, actually. ~10 mil of that will go towards covering the previously non-guaranteed part of the 3rd year. So Les will still be paying ~17-18 mil.
indeed, amnesty is pretty awesome when the player has huge partially guaranteed years. if he stayed in Houston and was cut before that 3rd year, he'd be 34 or so. there's no way he recovers those ~10 mil in the open market.
Seriously, Man you guys need to get out the house because all this Howard/Lin stuff is making you guys go nuts. It was clearly a shot at the ridiculous law in PHX and not a shot at Scola. SMH Geez cant joke about anything around you sensitive broads.
I was hoping he'd wind up with the Spurs or maybe the Bulls, as they are legit contenders. Oh well, at least Dragic is familiar enough with him that the transition won't be to difficult for him. The Arizona climate on the other hand, I don't envy.
"We" (i.e., Les Alexander) don't have to pay the non-guaranteed portion of Scola's partially guaranteed year ($10M of his $11M salary in 2014-15). However, the minimum bid required of OTHER teams was $10M because THEY were required to pay that portion. So, only the portion of a bid amount ABOVE $10M actually goes to reimburse Les Alexander for Scola's remaining guaranteed salary. The Rockets will pay Luis Scola a total of ~$17.5M over the next three years to NOT play basketball for them. I know it's for the greater good and gives the team that precious salary cap flexibility guys like me love, but it's still depressing to think about that fact.
I very much agree. You know you have an imperfect system when a guy like Scola (who has as much and probably more joy for the game of basketball than any other Rocket in history) has to be paid to not play for a team that he loves and a team which loves him. I'm not saying I have a better system, I'm just saying it is a shame that something like that has to occur. Scola was not one of the best Rocket players we have ever had, but he will always be one of my favorites.
