Any good deals on Amazon? I'm on a buying frenzy and already a few grand lighter so post your good deals.
I'm expecting this to happen soon to California too. It will suck, but it's necessary. I use Amazon all the time...but taxes are needed. States are going bankrupt because of loopholes . Poor leadership, out-of-control state pensions, and entitlement programs are reasons, too, sure, but we can at least fix the loophole one. Teehee. Excited to pay my first taxes on Amazon later this year.
Actually, Arkansas passed the same law requiring people to pay taxes to Amazon, but Amazon told them to go to hell and just ended their affiliate program there, as did other online retailers. This basically just hurt a bunch of smaller business owners in the state from the looks of it : http://www.thearkansasproject.com/the-arkansas-amazon-sales-tax-is-now-live-hows-that-going-so-far/
It's not really the same law - it only related to affiliate marketing stuff, as opposed to the Texas one which was based on them having warehouses here. At the end of the day, it hurts home-based affiliate businesses, but benefits local brick-and-morter retailers if there is less shopping done online. In the long-run, as more and more states pass this and ultimately a federal law passes, the problem will resolve itself and there won't be a disadvantage anymore to actually being located in a state. Amazon actually claims to be OK with that (maybe they realize they are fighting a losing battle) - their big problem is having different rules and rates for every state & every jurisdiction that they have to deal with.
What I meant was they passed a law to collect sales taxes - I'm sure laws that collects sales taxes can beimplemented somewhat differently. One of the major reasons I remember being cited for these taxes is, ironically enough, Amazon Prime. The growth of its use has fueled Amazon's growth apparently. This, in turn, is requiring them to build more distribution warehouses around the US. They wanted to build more such warehouses in Texas, so from what I understand, this was the deal that was struck : "we need more warehouses/distribution centers, so ok, we'll pay taxes". I would've been willing to give up Amazon Prime if it meant getting tax-free products.
So is the tax collected on items sold directly by Amazon? I just purchased something today. It was a Prime item but sold by a re-seller. There was no tax.
Seems to be that way. Sales facilitated by Amazon don't get taxed. Only if the item is provided by Amazon itself, or if that particular retails is located in TX.
Amazon is looking into making warehouses in the biggest cities in the country to make shipping items even faster... same-day delivery. If they do offer something like that for Prime members, I won't mind the tax. http://blog.seattlepi.com/thebigblo...use-empire-so-you-can-have-same-day-delivery/
I don't even want to get into my rant. Buy short answer is do not do it... It is full of complications.
