What's with the sports writers getting all tabloidy and contacting Lin's HS basketball coach and other "sources"? Really makes me think twice about what I'm reading. Was really surprised Yahoo! ran an article that said Lin's HS coach thought Lin sounded surprised that NYK might not match. Are these the same type of "sources" for Dwight?

Why do I think that Dolan is getting the media to smear Lin so that he wouldn't look so bad not matching Morey's offer sheet.

I am warming up to the idea of getting Lin back.

Whether I think Lin is worth this money or not, it does seem funny how the media/ESPN has slammed this contract offer from the Rockets. I get a strong feeling that if NYK had offered this same contract first then there wouldn't be all this whining about him getting overpaid. It just feels like another "Houston sucks" media spin.

When Lin was killing it for the Knicks, the media couldn't get off his jock. Now that he might be going to Houston (for a good bit of money), they've changed their tune.

I heard an interesting reasoning behind the Lin signing on sports radio this morning. I have always thought the signing was more about getting Asians fans back watching rockets, and I still do, but it also could wake up Howard to the fact he becomes an instant Asian favorite along with all the marketing money that comes with that.
makes it a little harder to turn down that 20 something extra that he gets if he resigns here, plus all the marketing money he got from Asian fans. sooooo that Linn money works in a lot more ways than one

While I firmly believe the NY Knicks and the east coast media is clearly butthurt over the way the Lin story has unfolded, I also worry that Lin's "fifteen minutes" has past, and that folks here will be wondering what all the hype about Lin was all about midway through the season. Heck, even the best rookies go through a "sophomore slump." If that does happen, I suspect the money people will expect from Linsanity II will evaporate. Furthermore, we may have to develop thicker skins when the Knicks fans and media get their chance to give back to us...

My friend in New York says that the most people up there think the Knicks will still match.

I think Dolan won't match based on his legendary reputation of holding grudges.

Yeah, I'm not getting excited about this one until it's completely final. This is one of the world's richest franchises with complete control over one of the league's brightest young stars (especially in marketability). I'd be thrilled beyond belief if they don't match, but if something seems too good to be true, it frequently is.

I'm sure they're angry over a lot of things with how it went down, but 72 hours is a lot of time to let emotions settle. Especially with all the uncertainty around Kidd, too.

they can also match and then trade lin next year before the lux tax hits

and they can also match and then lobby the league office down the street for the next 2 years to modify the lux tax rules - if history has taught us anything thus far, it is that the commissioner's office is not kosher

    It's one of two choices:

-Be seen as idiots now (zomg we let Lin go y didnt we resign him before free agency)
    or
-Be seen as idiots later (zomg we nevar shoulda match that stoopid contract now we r in cap hell)

Knowing NY and their 5 minute attention span, they'll choose the latter.

Yeah, my friends are talking about getting season tickets, but I went from believing NY wouldn't match a week ago when it seemed like they would, to doubting it when it seems like they won't. Don't want to get my hopes up :p

Asian-American? Yes. Not a JOF but definitely would be more excited!

Can anyone confirm the timeline at this point? Has the league ruled yet? Is it Tuesday at midnight or has the clock even started...

Not if MSG stock starts to freefall.

Dolan doesn't answer to basketball fans but he does have to address concerns from his shareholders.

    Its not that easy.

They are over the tax apron already without Lin's contract, and the restrictions on player movement and contracts outlined in the CBA go into effect NEXT YEAR. (2013-14)

They would have to move him THIS YEAR to be able to do it without the restrictions about receiving a SnT player affecting them.

So far the stock is relatively unchanged. Down a buck or so.

For NYK to sign and trade Lin later, they're going to need to hope both Lin's play and his marketability improve to a point that a sucker team gets hooked to pay that third year 15M. But then again, if he gets to that status, they won't want to let him go.
