On Nov 4, 1825, the Erie Canal, built by government, opened with a western terminus of Buffalo, NY, which then had 2,400 residents. By the 1840's, 93,000 people passed through Buffalo. Between 1820 and 1850, the population of Buffalo went from just 2,000 to 42,000. The Erie Canal linked Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, Utica, Rochester, and Schenectady. Proximity to the canal reduced costs and manufacturing in the western part of the state increased by 262% between 1820 and 1840.

I guess those towns had more smart people than then comparable towns like Plattsburgh and Centerville.

Oh, and that government project also had a little impact on the home of the eastern terminus:

Did Apple wait for consumer to say make me the iPhone?

Or... Did Apple make the iPhone with the hopes that the consumers will buy it?

Did Apple create the PDA market the IPhone's lamented forerunner is based on?

Did it create the mobile phone market?

Who is reponsible for the wireless communication spectrum, the development of the Internet, and the training required to send talented engineers off to Silicon Valley?

As someone who took a huge risk 13 years ago to start a small business based on using new technology to provide architectural services I don't mind being reminded that government helped to make that possible. I am reminded of that every time I look up from my desk and see the two degrees from state universities where I got the education to be able to develop the business. I also don't mind being reminded every time I send an email, conduct an online meeting, upload a file to share to with clients and / or contractors, that the network and technology possible for that was pioneered by the government.

As another poster noted earlier it is a chicken and egg issues. Yes the wealth, the profit motive and rugged individualism created greatly to build our society but at the same time nothing is every done in a vacuum. It also took education, infrastructure and even regulation to also.

That's great. I'm glad you took risk and it worked out. It usually does ;) Some people do, some people don't though for those that do, they should not be resented for their success by those that don't. There just seems to be a theme being touted by our liberal leaning elected officials like the rhetoric from President Obama that businesses and entrepreneurs must be grateful for government for their success. Obviously, it is a two way street. The point of my post was that the .5%'ers are really not being called out like they should though [and rarely ever are]. It is not small business owners/risk takers/entrepreneurs and their 'greed/success' creating income disparity issues, it is the Wall St crowd and mega corps who essentially are our government at this point. [The $1mil+ type earners]

[FWIW for the sake of this thread relating to govt & taxes, I am in favor of letting the Bush tax cuts expire. ]

Yet we will never see unrealized technologies that were not created because the resources that would have been used to develop them were seized by the DoD and Stanford. They could have been even greater.

and your taxes, and those of millions of your fellow citizens, provided the funding to develop the network, and endow those state universities (of course, with private funding as well.)

A litle misdirection amidst the misdirection...

Mitt Romney's Bain and tax woes overshadow campaign

...The Romney campaign held a phone conference with reporters on Monday morning in what looks like another desperate bid to switch the focus from the candidate's record with Bain and his tax affairs.

The new Romney line from one of his advisers, Ed Gillespie, is that "there is a sense of Chicacgo-style politics being brought into DC". Basically, those with the right political connections get favours.

But the Romney campaign then over-elaborated, with a convoluted argument about favours given to Obama donors has led to the out-sourcing of US jobs overseas.

In terms of distracting media attention, it was far from successful. Of a handful of questions taken, one was about Romney's role at Bain Capital and the other was when Romney would release his tax returns...
