I wonder what happens with Omer Asik, since it looks like Lin will be a Rocket now. If Asik is one too, I don't see how it's possible to take on Duhon, Turkoglu, Richardson and Davis' salaries, and keep Lee, doesn't seem doable money and cap wise. Alone between Dwight, Hedo, Duhon, Davis and Richardson, thats $46.8 Million, plus Lin's $8.3 million, then if we keep Lamb who is $2,111,160, and Motiejunas at $1,361,400, right there we have $58,572,560 MILLION committed for 8 players, and putting us over the cap, and no way to have Asik's $8.3 million cap number, plus not counting Fishers $644,005 dead money, Livingston $1M guaranteed portion, Forbes $1.5M and Brockman's $1M.
Yahta, Yahta, Yahta.....Morey will be so smart when he actually does something beside shuffle players like cards. How about a playoff run, that would be nice. It amazes me how you get this genius reputation when your job is getting results and you haven't gotten any.
It's a slightly better analysis, but these ESPN analysts continue to write articles in order to get the NY and LA markets to read them, rather than with any knowledge of what is likely to happen. Morey doesn't need to offer to take back Hedo, Duhon, Richardson, and Davis, when the competitor teams (LA and formerly NJ) have no assets at all to give up. The other teams can scarcely afford to take back even one of these contracts, not to mention having no good draft picks to offer.
Good grief, would you rather he did nothing and just kept all the players from last season? At the very least DM is not settling for a mediocre team.
I agree. We're either going to take 1, maybe 2 bad contracts max or not make the trade at all. How do you sell Howard on staying in Houston if you offer him basically the same team he wanted to leave? ESPN's accuracy around the entire Rockets offseason has been 50% comical, 50% just plain sad.
This surprisingly puts into context the way I have been feeling about this whole offseason. The cool part is, Morey has convinced Les that our "assets" are not as trade-able unless if they are versatile (a point guard vs a lotto pick). Which, in the same breath, means we have to get young, talented or great assets in return for our players that are keeping us mediocre. Now, don't get me wrong. I love Lowry. I love Dragic. I love Scola. These guys are winners and it has been my pleasure watching these guys. But, without a superstar we will continue doing the same thing. Morey has somehow convinced Les (yes I believe Morey is the one who has convinced him) to rebuild (tank?) or land a superstar vs keep floating on until we can trade for an available superstar. I am all for this course of action. I am also glad that we attempted to do things the way in which we did it. A lot of fans are not because we "could have done this two-three years ago." But, there's one thing about doing something that is not done too often. You get to see the results. Not the potential result. But, the true result. Sure, that doesn't mean that if we were to try that again 10 years down the road that we couldn't be successful with it. But, it just adds THAT much more certainty in our plan which we have now committed to. I am glad we have Morey as our GM and despite his hits he has taken lately, I will continue to think for myself and assess his moves/plans with my own critical mind. He is relentless, fearless, incredibly intelligent, hard working and once we get that star I 95% (always leave room for doubt) believe he will build us a contender around him.
Exactly. Would you still have yours or would I still have mine if we didn't accomplish what we were supposed to accomplish? The NBA is divided into two groups; those make the playoffs and those who don't. The first group is considered a "win," the second group is the "lose." Since we are in the "lose" group why is our GM a genius? That is all I am asking. How long should it take to go from "lose" to "win?" Five years? Ten years? Morey has been a genius since he got here. That's the mystery. Some on this board seem more interested in the details of transactions than basketball games. I like the games. I like wins. It is really simple.
This is not about doing something or doing nothing; it is why is he regarded as a genius when he hasn't really gotten results? I don't get it. When did shuffling players and playing with numbers count in the NBA? Only when you are progressing, winning, things like that. Then maybe you are genius or just lucky. What I don't understand is why are you a genius for accomplishing nothing.
The reason why Lin adds so much value in those models is everything he does basically adds to statistical wins (with the sole exception of high turnovers, which is offset by high usage rate). He draws fouls in the paint, he scores in the 4th quarter, he makes both his post players and wing shooters score more. Lin's game, his style of play, just adds a lot of sabremetric value. All his prorated advanced stats are r****dedly good (like comparable to HOFers at that stage). In my opinion, Lin will still be overmatched versus the elite teams... Thunder for example, but he should get them many wins versus mid level teams of games that for whatever reason might be dropped during the season. solid, Morey isn't a genius. I'm not sure there's such a thing as a basketball genius because basically you're dealing with Stern and all sorts of randomness like Lebron deciding to hit South Beach with his buddy Wade and pick up hot chicks. but it's not like Morey has done nothing. that 2009 team if healthy was a top team. Morey isnt' responsible for injuries but for the team he puts together. it's not like he's done nothing.
R2K I have another question, I wanted to ask you to elaborate on the first post when you made it, but I know there are only so many things you can say, and some things are better unsaid. But now you have made a second post about the Rockets offer. Every single article that has been made about the Rockets offer to Orlando for Dwight starting from a couple of weeks has progressively asked for less and less from the Rockets. I am sure everyone remembers the original ESPN article that asked for the farm along with the kitchen sick that spawned a 1000 posts with numerous posters either calling for Morey's firing or calling him incompetent. I personally thought it was negotiation via the media and never believed the offer was realistic otherwise Orlando would have already jumped on it. I thought the offer in this article was realistic and something the Daryl Morey and the Rockets might actually consider ...but you just put that hypothesis to rest. I know the Rockets can play hard ball since Rockets are the only realistic team that has both the assets to offer in a trade and the cap space to consummate it. That being said, is it just a matter of the Rockets playing chicken with Orlando thinking that Orlando will get scared that Dwight may actually walk and they will get nothing? Do you know how realistic the above offer is, and if their is wiggle room in the Rockets offer? And if the Rockets and Orlando are not willing to budge, will the Rockets just walk away and see what free agents they can recruit next summer? OK - I just reread the article and I think I know what the hick-up is. Please correct me if I am wrong, but it not what Orlando wants from Houston, but what Orlando wants Houston to take back in addition to Dwight. The part I just edited is in blue.
If only reality was a simple as you apparently perceive it to be. He was given a Ferarri in 2007, and the wheels fell off the moment he pulled off the lot. Genius is not defined by championship rings. He is a statistical genius. That's not opinion; it's fact. While that hasn't lead us to the promised land during his time in Houston, it has kept the team from plummeting into the depths of the league ala the Knicks 2000-2010, Bulls, 99-08, Nets 07-current, etc. Basically, he's helped us remain a winning team, with a flexible roster. Just as his boss asked. In similar situations, most teams end up buried in bad contracts that were signed with free cap space in a desperate attempts to remain relevant.
The Lin deal is very simple to understand from a business side Look, we are going to be irrelevant for the next few years, we are not bringing in Dwight, that's it, we aren't shipping 9 youngsters out to grab dwight and 3 overpaid Magic players.....soo....... We bring in LIN. Year 3 we overpay at $15M, but so what we have 2 top 10 picks next years and 3 more top 2 picks this year, plus parsons in final year of his deal at that time. We will be rocking close to 8 players give or take on rookie scale deals, morey knows this and is willing to "suck" right now but he still generates massive revenue for Les via jersey sales, marketing opportunities with jeremy, and many nationally televised games thanks to....Jeremy.. If you can't see all those factors then you're overlooking the business side of things. Honestly would I rather have D-Will? Sure, but if I owned a team going nowhere as it tries to rebuild, I'd rather heavily profit than not and that in essence is what this Lin deal says. It says Les misses Yao and the dollars he brought and he's diving back into that cash pool as we rebuild.... 2 years from now we could run a lineup of Lin Lamb Parsons Motiejunas Cody Zeller or Nerlens Noel with a bench of Royce White Marcus Morris Terrence Jones another top 10 pick at PG or SG from toronto Id love Caldwell-pope from UGA we will be young, cheap, have a good shot at a top 10 pick in 2014 too
