Something I, a biased Asian Jeremy Lin fan, undoubtedly agree with.
Jeremy Lin in my mind was worth $6-7 mil per season tops.
Can't really agree with him getting THAT much money; although I don't blame him for wanting to get paid. That's business.

    25mil/3 years.

Roughly 8.33 a year. So you are saying the contract is ridiculous because he is making 1 to 2 million more a year than you think he is worth? That's a pretty thin margin of "ridiculous" you operate on.

And BTW, while this is not the only reason he is coming here....you don't think the Rockets will make that 1 or 2 million back over the course of the year from the fan community.

What's actually ridiculous is people not understanding how contracts aren't always solely based on what a player's skill level is. But also need and what type of other perks they bring to a team (leadership, personality....fans).

Depends how you look at it. From a purely basketball perspective, Lin's contract is crazy. But the real question for the Knicks is: Does the "Linsanity" brand and him being chinese more than compensate for the 3rd year? A backup question is how much of a dropoff (if any) do they get with Raymond Felton as a replacement. Another: Do their huge revenue streams make one year of luxury tax penalty something to worry about?

Most of us here agree the Knicks aren't legit contenders either way, so it's not like losing Lin will cost them a championship. But unless fatso Raymond Felton has a significant jump in efficiency and productivity this coming season, the boo birds at MSG will have a field day.

Felton was a complete disgrace last year in Portland. One can argue giving him 3ys/$10 million to be your starting PG (backed up by Jason Kidd) is about as crazy as the Knicks matching the Rockets' offer to Lin.

RedRedemption, you are saying Lin is only being overpaid $1-$2 million/year? That is peanuts. This is the Knicks, not the Jazz.

Don't forget need to....we had a massive, massive need at PG....you pay for that. Even then, we didn't blow the bank....and if Lin can come even close to replicating what he did for those 40 or so days, then his contract will be justified. Easily.

The Rockets will make that money back, but that doesn't matter. That's $8.33mil less money that we will have to take back ORL's contracts and it completely destroys our ability to get Chris Paul for max next season unless we S/T.

I like Lin, but if we still somehow get Howard, Lin is not going to be enough to convince Howard to stay. If we don't get Howard then none of this matters and Lin's contract becomes a null point. From a basketball standpoint it makes 100% sense. Lin is a PG, we have no PGs, he's a good PG, and we need him. From a going after Howard standpoint, its a little less sensible.

Paying an extra $ million for the next 3 years for Lin is peanuts for the Knicks.

The Knicks overpaid by at least $30 million for Eddy Curry, Jared Jeffries, and Allan Houston. It's like cutting $5 off your grocery bill, because you spent too much money on a car last year.

    Luxury tax...
Not only that but why would the Knicks get Raymond AND Kidd? They can't split time between Lin, Raymond, and Kidd.

Dude you are like a broken record. If I were linn I would get a restraining order out against you. You are pathetic. Did some little Asian dude bang your mom and wife? It's obvious you have some kind of vendeta against Linn. You make it a point to go in EVERY thread and bad mouth him. Get a life.

FYI Linns numbers are better than Nash's or Kidd's at this point in his career. So suck on that.

I get what you're saying from it being counterproductive to a Howard pursuit. But the way I see it is different. Howard needs to be at least somewhat competitive next year. Telling him, we are going to give you this guy named Machado as your PG but next year we promise we are going to try really hard to get Chris Paul isn't going to cut it. That tactic throws out the window any real chance of getting him to extend before he hits free agency (always a slight possibility) and basically banks on the idea that he is OK with losing his ass off here all year long and then is going to trust us to make it better. Odds say that showing him some competitiveness while he is here will pay dividends towards persuasion in free agency.

Second point is Morey has shown time and time again....he can clear cap room through various means if required to do something he wants. We have extremely competent people in the FO when it comes to getting good value and lining up things for possibilities (the knock on them has been sealing the deal). If they need to do some things over the course of the year to get cap room because they believe they actually have a real chance at Howard and Paul....they'll find a way.

This way makes a ton more sense than just getting Howard here and hoping everything works out next summer. You are only doing yourself a favor by putting up a flexible, quality roster around him while he makes a decision. You can always make changes later.

If we get Lin and Howard, the worst case scenario is we still lose bad, don't make the playoffs and then Howard is out of here. But would that scenario have changed if Lin wasn't on the team?

    Exactly.

We are going to have to get a PG better than freaking Courtney Fortson if the Rockets want to win more than 10 games even with Howard one way or the other. And while I do think we wouldn't have a problem resigning Brooks if New York matches, I do think that we would have to resign Brooks to a multiple year deal, and that's going to screw any fantasies of Chris Paul one or another.

I just don't Paul leaving the Clippers anyways, so gambling Howard who we're gambling a lot on to begin with is just dumb. Get the best point guard on the market. Right now, that's Lin.

    Just my 2 cents.

-For a team like the Rockets with the capspace to spare in the next few seasons(given they stay in rebuild mode and don't make a huge splash), paying Jeremy Lin this salary for just 3 seasons is well worth it given the return you will get in terms of the product on and off the court. This is given that Lin still continues to perform at a moderately high level.

-For the Knicks, I just don't see the point. You already have two of the biggest names in basketball in the largest market existing in the world for basketball or media in general. You will sell out every game regardless, and MSG's TV ratings will continue to perform well.

If Im Dolan, the most important thing for me is winning. Your marketing revenue will be comparable with or without Lin over the next few years. On the Knicks Lin isn't going to be the focal point of that team, and the Asian market will slowly tune out as Lin and his great story become less relevant in 6 months.

What they cannot do is get so many bad contracts on their roster that they cannot make moves to shed non-performing players. Its not about what one owner is willing to pay, its about what the other guy is willing to pay. Players are tradable commodities. You already have Jason Kidd and Raymond Felton coming in. Let Lin walk.

Back to the Rockets- For the Rockets its a decent move. Good fit for McHale's PG friendly system where he will be much more productive, and gives some exposure to the team all the while not really hampering future moves dramatically.

However if he does improve even more, and the Rockets have a couple young players that explode onto the scene in a year or two they might be looking at salary cap issues when they need to extend those players, and re-sign Lin. Lets all pray that this happens because that means the Rockets are relevant again and hit the jackpot with one or more of their young guys.

Young players always have their future potential factored into the price of the contract. He still pretty young and has plenty of time to improve and live up to his contract.

I haven't heard anyone mention this but do you suppose the way Lin's contract is loaded also leaves him open to be an expiring deal on that third year? If Morey believes Dwight is coming and we are building out a contender - is this a move to make us decent in the short term and give us flexibility to get that piece the team will need once we have a better idea of what our roster's strengths and weaknesses are?

    You mad Knicks?

Lin is his own man now. When he was there they were going throw him out anyway. What the point of him being loyal to the knicks? Knicks fans need to get over it. I remember Knicks fans were being a b!tch/racist to him on facebook when he was there..

Reports yesterday stated that Rockets found a loophole in the Arenas rule where they would be paying the standard 8 mil a season while the original team(the Knicks) would be subject to the poison pill back loaded scenario.

Either way yes, as an expiring contract will always have some value if the player is still somewhat productive on the court. I don't think expiring contracts will ever not be somewhat of an asset for teams needing to shed salary.

I think the flexibility is still there post Howard trade. I think Asik could be easily moved at any point of his contract if need be. As Dwights backup he will improve even more going against him in practice, and working on his offensive game with the development guys in Houston.

The flexibility really just depends on whether or not Houston will have to absorb both Richardson and Big Baby's contract. Those are by far the worst contracts for Houston to obtain that would hamper alternate moves dramatically. Much more difficult to move than Lin or Asik.

This may not true, if Lin performs at reasonable level without injury, even without cap, Morey may convince Clipper to sign and trade if Paul choose Houston over other teams.
