Bynum made it clear that he did not want to be in Orlando. He is on the other hand willing to be with the Houston Rockets. Orlando is looking for draft picks and young players, and the Lakers have none of those. That's where the Rockets step in, we offer a package and take back Bynum and some bad contracts while the Lakers basically receive Howard in return to trading out Bynum. Comprende?

Why would they want Bynum, who is in the same situation as Howard, a FA next year? One reason why Houston would rather have Bynum is the asking price should be much lower, with LA taking on some of ORL's bad contracts as well instead of dumping it all on us. In turn, ORL would receive less of our prospects since they are receiving a larger financial relief. Also, the chances of Bynum resigning here is almost a certainty, as opposed to more of a gamble(a good gamble) with Howard. At the end of the day you still weigh your options. Personally my head says to still take Howard for the steeper price and bigger risk, since it offers a much clearer path to contention. But a big part of me is actually rooting for Bynum, even though the team would have to go through a rebuilding phase with him, it would be fun to root for the guy/team to grow into a superstar/champion.

*sigh why would houston give orlando all the things that they want in a howard trade (minus the top tier talent in andrew) without getting howard? because bynum says he will resign? morey doesn't give a crap what bynum or howard says. if there is a three way trade with lakers and orl, the only way it happens is if orlando insists on getting bynum + our assets and we facilitate that. for example: lakers trade bynum and gasol for howard, patterson, and take back a couple of the sucky contracts from orl. we get gasol and give away martin, one or two young players and dallas pick orl gets martin, bynum, one young player and dallas pick for howard and their junky contracts. that is the ONLY framework for a 3way deal. not saying that i support it since i think the gasol ship has sailed.

umm..we do not want Gasol and I think that ship has sailed. The offer WOULD NOT be the same for Bynum as for Dwight. LA needs Houston (or a 3rd team) to consumate a deal with Orlando in order to fulfill Orlando's wishes to set them up for rebuild. If it is a straight up trade Bynum for Dwight, then Orlando is left with a worse center and the same crappy team that couldn't get anywhere. Enter Houston. Houston can offer 1 or 2 first round picks, a young rookie, and a Martin/Patterson combo and/or Houston takes on one of orlando's bad contracts...LAL would add to that with an asset. LA then sends Bynum to Houston, and Dwight goes to LA. Pretty easy to understand. Utlimately, we wouldn't offer as much for Dwight straight up and Orlando doesn't just want Bynum back with no cap relief or picks/assets (which LA does not have). Dwight doesn't want to resign with Houston, Bynum might. and that is why its intriguing and actually a good deal for all 3 parties.
Houston doesn't have leverage. Orlando has leverage. Why? Because they have Dwight Howard. And they have teams that are interested in Dwight Howard. Morey can lowball all he wants to lower the asking price. What's going to happen? BREAKING: Howard traded to Lakers in Blockbuster trade. Unless this douchebag Magic GM is asking for the farm for Howard, Morey needs to start realizing that he has a lot to lose. He just amnestied Scola to clear more cap room. He struck out on Draft Night for Howard. He struck out at the deadline for Howard. He struck out on Deron Williams. He struck out on Carmelo Anthony. He can't strike out again. The fans will call for his head. He needs to be logical and just get a deal done. Get your damn superstar here so we can build around him and go from there. I'm getting tired of the hoopla. If after all this Dwight Howard trade crap and media craze results in D12 wearing a Laker uniform, I'm gonna have to sit back and reconsider my fandom of the NBA.
Why risk having Howard leave after one season, after we've gutted our team. We are in a good position to rebuild/reload with this young team. I put faith in Morey that he isn't going to let this happen. If he makes a trade for Howard, we will have safeguards in place to make sure we don't lose everything and take on bad contracts for a rental.

Given that half of this board is calling for Morey's head BECAUSE he's going after Dwight Howard and not tanking, combined with the fact that Friedman's openly stated that Morey's job security is terrific, I disagree. Morey has nothing to lose. If there's no Dwight Howard trade, fine. We'll get a superstar through the draft. Not ideal, but better than literally throwing away everything.
