Really? You got all that from his first real season of NBA basketball? Too small of a sample size....

So it would Chandler, Melo, Stat, Novak, and Lin for 2014 making around 80+mil? Oh they're screwed badly! Those taxes jump them up to around 150+mil easy.

The Knicks will match up to a Billion dollars.
    Hahahahahah

Lin and Howard together would be huge. It kind of doubles each of their marketability and in my opinion makes it more likely Dwight would resign.
    (not for basketball reasons .......$$$$$$$$)

150 Million is chump change for them. They were paying 125 million with Marbury and company and the only thing Dolan was upset about is they only won 26 games that year. He will pay for Lin without a blink

The luxury tax isn't the only problem. The league punishes teams by restricting their ability to offer MLE contracts.

Lin has to self-mutilate his marketing potential to get NYK not to match. Getting arrested with a tranny hooker in Vegas would be a good start.

Yes but after that team only won 26 games it made it very hard to rebuild a team because of the market for taking on those bad contracts in trade. I don't think they have a problem paying lux tax, but they should have a problem locking themselves into unmoveable contracts if they ever needed to make moves to their roster.

Still Lin shouldnt be too bad on this deal. Only 3 years with a large expiring final year should be moveable. The Amare contract and the Chandler contract however will haunt them if injuries plague them or they can't pull it together and win games. I don't think its the lux tax that worries their mgmt, but they should be worried about their flexibility to overhaul the roster if they had to.

When CP3 becomes a FA after this season, I understand that the Clippers have his Bird rights and can offer him the most.

Do the rules allow the Clippers to SnT CP3 to the Rockets at a max bird rights contract?

I think not, but wanted to know. I ask b/c I am half wondering whether Lin's potential value to a west coast team is high b/c he could recapture Linsanity and on the west coast, that would really, really play well w the massive asian population.

Also, dreamcasting for a minute here -- if we get Howard and if (huge if) CP3 decides he wants to team up with Howard -- perhaps a near Linsanity Jeremy Lin might be pretty good compensation to the Clippers. But that's only relevant if the Clips can SnT him to the Rockets at Max bird rights contract.

How Much Will Lin Really Cost the Knicks?

How Much Will Matching Lin Really Cost the Knicks?

    If They Match

If the below referenced article is correct, the Knicks will be approximately 17 million over the LT with just 8 players in the 2014-2015 season. To fill out the remaining roster spots, we'll add a conservative 14 million (or 2 million per 7 players). The table below depicts the breakdown of the incremental luxury taxes paid by the Knicks in this scenario.

That's ~$89,749,983 in LT alone! The LT will essentially double the salary commitment of their slightly above average team. They're looking at a total salary commitment of approximately $190 million! To use the parlance of this board, Isaiah would be rolling over in his grave.

Of course, they can do things to mitigate this cost, but the amnesty option is no longer available for them, and moving some of that salary without taking any back may prove difficult.

If They Match Lin AND Fields

They could also do more to exacerbate this problem. For instance, they could match the Landry Fields offer. This brings the LT tax number into the stratosphere at ~$108,749,978.25 and a salary commitment of ~$209,749,978.30.

In contrast, they could let Lin walk. The LT number is only ~$32,324,994.25.

In effect, with reasonable inference, matching the Lin offer could cost them $72,324,988.75 in 2014-2015 alone.

TL;DR - Morey really has Dolan's balls in a vise.

If CP3 is the "next" target in Morey's mind than I foresee a S&T with Lin plus others for CP3 to pair CP3 up with D12.

Well the Knicks' owner Dolan through history is known for paying huge amounts of money in taxes to sustain his team. But back then the luxury tax was not THIS strict so we do have a chance to land Lin. The Knicks have developed a liking for Landry Fields so I can really see them matching Toronto's offer sheet but to keep both Fields and Lin would be a big ask because of the taxing.

Yeah, it's insane. Those numbers will make even Dolan pause. I think they still match, but it isn't 100% that they do, IMO. It's a huge monetary hit and brings significant restrictions on how they can deal going forward under the new CBA. We'll see, of course, when the 3 days are up.

What day do the Knicks have to decide to match Lin's contract? Wasn't sure if it was business days or not

Maybe this should be a lesson to teams to keep it close to the vest regarding if they plan to match during the Moritorium period. Had they put out false info that they were not planning on matching or just kept their mouth shut then I have to believe DM would not have increased the contract for Lin.
