Meh. We gave up Lin for absolutely nothing last year and now we're offering him a multiyear multimillion contract? I know the circumstances are different but it just doesn't sound "genius" to me.
As i understand it, they never even offered him a contract. If he was that important to them then they should have offered a contract first. Now they getting pissy because lin went out and signed a contract with another team. Thats just stupid.
1) Morey obviously saw something in him to bring him in (when no other team wanted him). He also did well in the summer league to warrant the Knicks giving him a look, otherwise he'd be out of the league by now. 2) Lowry. Dragic. Morey had his two "assets" in line and there was no room for Lin--not his fault. You can't expect him to demand Lin get starters minutes or even sizable backup minutes off the bat when the Rockets have experienced and proven players like Lowry/Dragic. Houston just wasn't in a situation to play him. Think about how many other players could have had breakout moments if they only played for the right team, and had the opportunity. Who knows how many other "lins" were out there that never got a shot ... Morey's first instincts were proven right. I think that shows more than anything that Moreyball can identify potential in "forgotten" low valued players.
At least we didn't trade him away and give up a first round pick for basically nothing in return, like Phoenix did with Dragic.
I'd still rather have Dragic than Lin. I understand that the difference is the 4th year player option vs team option, but I get the feeling that its more about Linsanity and selling tickets than anything else. I suppose though that Lin gives Morey flexibility that Dragic doesn't.
Put this in the main thread, but figure it belongs in here too... How Much Will Matching Lin Really Cost the Knicks? If They Match If the below referenced article is correct, the Knicks will be approximately 17 million over the LT with just 8 players in the 2014-2015 season. To fill out the remaining roster spots, we'll add a conservative 14 million (or 2 million per 7 players). The table below depicts the breakdown of the incremental luxury taxes paid by the Knicks in this scenario. That's ~$89,749,983 in LT alone! The LT will essentially double the salary commitment of their slightly above average team. They're looking at a total salary commitment of approximately $190 million! To use the parlance of this board, Isaiah would be rolling over in his grave. Of course, they can do things to mitigate this cost, but the amnesty option is no longer available for them, and moving some of that salary without taking any back may prove difficult. If They Match Lin AND Fields They could also do more to exacerbate this problem. For instance, they could match the Landry Fields offer. This brings the LT tax number into the stratosphere at ~$108,749,978.25 and a salary commitment of ~$209,749,978.30. In contrast, they could let Lin walk. The LT number is only ~$32,324,994.25. In effect, with reasonable inference, matching the Lin offer could cost them $72,324,988.75 in 2014-2015 alone. TL;DR - Morey really has Dolan's balls in a vise. So you want the man to play for free?? It's not like we are giving up picks. We are signing him as a RFA at the market rate, and the Knicks are likely to match.

While this is true I still don't think I'm ready to say that Morey "fleeced" anybody. So he let's both Dragic and Lowry go just so he can get back the pg that he waived earlier last year because he believes in him? Besides if we don't sign Lin what other pg is available out there?
They got "pissy" because the Rockets changed the terms of the contract, not because Lin went out and signed an offer sheet. In fact, I'm sure they wanted Lin to go out and find a deal to match.
There is one other factor I have yet to see anyone mention: Um, memo to all the mensa-level NYK fans - Morey didn't just materialize out of thin air. He got his start in.. hello... (drum roll) ..yes, that's right! Boston! Duh. Screwing New York is probably like #2 on his list of daily activities every day when he wakes up. And I read through that thread on their forum.. it looks like maybe 1% of them have any clue about the ramifications of the limitations put in place by the new CBA. If the NYK match this offer, it will go down as one of the stupidest moves in NBA history, and that is saying a lot, even for New York, which has one of the most laughable personnel histories EVER.
If Lin played for us last season we would still have to give him a multimillion dollar contract anyways. He's a free agent!
