Starting this thread specifically to discuss possible mechanics of the Big Trade. Obviously I want to read some educated salary cap drivel from our resident capologists. Would you mind going through some trade iterations for us using different combinations of our youngsters and draft picks with what you feel is the most likely scenarios? I have been trying to figure out who we are keeping and who we are sending. Since we are apparently taking back Duhon, JRich, and one of either Davis or Hedo (I suspect Davis), then in my opinion, I would be surprised of we lose more than 3 of our young players. But that's just my opinion of course. I expect we're gonna lose the Dallas and Toronto picks. I'm not the capologist of guys like Bima and CH but I'd like to get this started and get thier opinions along with others that have cap knowledge. How can this trade be configured to give us the most options going forward....such as preserving our MLE, the Lowry TPE, and/or possibly creating a TPE of much larger value based on configuring the trade so we are trading Martin for either nothing or a little bit of nothing? We all know Morey is all about setting up the next move. He doesn't do trades unless he is left with options to make other moves after the trade. In other words, he doesn't allow himself to get backed in a corner and land-locked so to speak by being locked in with bad contract players and no player acquisition ability.....like the Orlando Magic did to themselves and are not trying to extracate themselves from. So, my thought is we are going to have some young talent and TPE's to work with when Morey is all done with this trade, so that he can add another piece or two of great significance that will help us be a top seed in the West this year in order to help Dwight see our vision, and that will let us make more moves after this coming season with Dwight re-signed to really go for it all in 2013-14, that is if we don't actually go for it all in 2012-13. It appears to me one of the key things we are going to do in this trade is absorb Howard's salary straight into the cap and possibly Duhon as well by either cutting somebody or sending them back to Orlando to cut. After that I get kinda cloudy on what are the best options. My instincts simply tell me if we can swallow Howard's salary into cap space that we can possibly come out with some TPE's that would be of value at the trade deadline. Lay it out for us guys.
We are under the cap so trade exemptions-we will be enough under the cap to get at least one max player, and more-davismis a bloated contract, but Turk would be an expiring deal after this year (valuable) -I think Jrich will do well here, and duhon will play well then be traded for picks, and cap space. Just MO -if we only take Turk, Jrich, duhon then we can still have enough room for two max free agents CH has a good breakdown of all scenarios in spreadsheet format
I wonder how the Lin offer sheet factors in... or Asik for that matter... Seems DM reworked Lin deal to push harder to get him. Report on other thread said we'd give 1 youngster and take 1 bad contract...I'm not a proponent of the 'big deal' but even if we take 2 bad contracts... Big Baby and JRich (along w D12). Also said we'd give up only 1 youngster... (give up 1 of royce or ross)... could even throw in in MMo, PPat, leur or forbes... Lin/Douglas/Mechado? JRich/Lamb Parsons/Royce or ross Big Baby/DMo/Royce or ross/leur or forbes D12/DMo/Jordan or smith ...that aint a bad lineup for a year..
I'm curious about this too.. It would be great to see what affects we would have salary cap wise if the trades go down the Knicks don't match Lin and Chicago doesn't match Asik; or they match one of the two. My guess is that we'd be slightly over the cap, and we'd end up making another deal at the trade deadline to get under the cap.
Well, when you trade a big man, you want a big in return, so I think Orlando would want D-Motie along the Florida boy. They just drafted 2 PF they like and have some PF's on the roster, so they likely don't need any PF's. So Patterson is out of the mix. Morris is a bust at 3 and they have plenty of PF's, so no go on that project. OUT: - Kmart - expiring tradeable contract - Parsons - Florida native - D-Motie - talented big (just signed contract, when can he be traded?) - 2 of our 3 rooks (most likely Lamb, White) - 2 first rounders - 2 second rounders - filler players to fit trade IN: - Howard - whatever bad contracts would fit the trade
At this point I'd rather tank and build up with young talent like the thunder. I'm not saying we'll get a Kevin Durant or even a russel Westbrook BUT parsons will only get better defensively, and I truly believe Lamb can be an NBA quality 3 point specialist. Let's get a top 5 pick in the future, and draft a center/ or a pg and start a new era in rockets basketball
There's no way we can keep all of those in a deal to get Howard.. From everything ive read it looks like they will want at least one of the rookies,Kmart, Parsons, maybe PPat I'd bet, and picks. I wouldn't rule out a three team deal though. For whatever reason I just keep thinking we will get Bynum. I have no real reason to think this, but I can picture that. I cant seem to see Howard in a Rockets jersey. Who knows.
This is not what the OP is asking for. Since the team is now gutted, we are well along the timeline for this trade for a star to go down. So please offer up a trade as per the OP thread topic.
So, if we sign Asik and Lin to offer sheets. Then we make a trade for one of Orlando's bad contracts, sending out less money and taking back more salary using the 150% rule to send us over the cap, then we trade them Martin for nothing, then the offer sheets are matched, then we absorb Dwight into the cap,....does that not generate us a TPE? That's what I'm talking about, the mechanics. There has to be a reason why we delayed signing Asik and Lin's offer sheets. Does it have something to do with the mechanics of the trade to get us TPE's and the ability to use our MLE?
And you expect to get the best center in the league in return? SMH In order to get, you gotta give. The more bad contracts they want us to absorb, the less players they're gonna get but having to keep both Parsons and Lamb would be a bit of a stretch. My prediction: Martin,Patterson,Lamb,Jones/Morris, and 2 future 1st round picks for Howard,JRich, an Davis/Duhon. Either Lamb or Parsons will be included in the deal, IMO. I'm guessing it would be Lamb since McHale and Morey loves Chandler Bang but then again, Florida loves Parsons as well so it's also possible he'd be included instead of Lamb. I don't see Morey giving up both players either. No way Orlando accepts a deal without either Parsons nor Lamb in the package. Heck, they could even want Motiejunas but no way Houston would deal him also considering they'd have to wait 30 days or less in order for Motie to be included in any trades. Bottomline, we will never get Dwight Howard if we make Parsons,Lamb an even Motiejunas untouchable. Motie will stay. But not both Parsons and Lamb too. Just like everyone else, i also tend to fall in love with our rookies but unlike everyone else, i try to keep it real. Just put yourselves in Hennigan's shoes and tell us you would trade Dwight to Houston without having to choose 1 or 2 players you want in return.
I think the key is whether the Lin offer sheet gets matched. I'm guessing that an offer sheet that previously had a 100% chance of being matched by NY now only has about a 66% chance of being matched. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/knic...b6FjL2sxQLO?utm_medium=rss&utm_content=Knicks If we beat the odds and the offer sheet is not matched, then we have our PG of the future. Even if Lin does not turn out to be all that, we are stuck with him, as his $8 million per year cap hit will seriously impede our ability to find a star PG in free agency. However, if the offer sheet is matched, then we need to retain flexibility with the salaries we take back to have room to sign a max salary free agent next summer. If we have Lin, I wouldn't mind us taking 3 or 4 bad contracts from Orlando, in exchange for keeping most of our young assets. Otherwise, we need to send out most of our young assets (except DMo!) to not have to take back bad contracts, so that we can maintain salary cap flexibility.
I'm not sure how our cap situation is as of now but ready for these two offer sheets to be dealt with so we can see if we're still in the running or close to coming to terms with a trade. I'd actually rather go after Bynum in a three-way trade that was speculated since he said we're a team he'd sign with long-term but I know we still have to give up the picks and our young players to get it done. Obviously Howard would go to LA along with Duhon, with ORL receiving Martin, Patterson, Morris, Parsons, White TOR 1st, DAL 1st, 2 LA future 1st rd picks. While Houston taking back Bynum, Turkolglu, Richardson Starting: Lin, Lamb, Jones, Motiejunas, Bynum Reserves: Douglas, Richardson, Turkoglu, Harrellson
