Rockets will sign Omer Asik to his offer sheet after New York matches or - ahem - chooses not to.

What I don't understand is, why didn't we sign Lin on Monday? Then we'd already be waiting for Chicago to match Asik now and could complete the Howard deal sooner.

Probably because there was a moratorium and nobody could sign their contracts until July 11th. Also, it didn't matter what the Rockets did to Lin or Asik as it was and still is Orlando's decision.

I think the longer they waited the better for them. NYK want to improve and signing free agents were something they needed to do... by waiting it gave Morey time to see what kind of deal the NYK gave out and thus seeing what the NYK bottom dollar was in signing Lin. Once he had a gauge of what their financials were like with the new contract, it allowed him to increase his offer. The verbal agreement during RFA bounded the rockets to honor it but it didn't bind them to make a better offer, they just could not make a worser offer or retract their offer.

Or the Rockets leaked fake numbers giving the Knicks the impression that Lin's contract would be more manageable....I think Camby sign and trade was done intentionally to make it that much harder for Knicks to match. The change in contract is potentially 40 million more than the Knicks were thinking they would spend.

Enemy GMs already feared making trades with the D-man now they will just hide inside the close when he comes calling.

So what hurts more now? Not giving a player option to Dragic or overpaying Lin in that 3rd year. We will be playing luxury too.

How is it better to overpay someone in the 3rd year and most likely pay luxury tax rather then just giving a guy his player option in the final year?

Korver's contract wasn't guaranteed. A S&T saves their MLE to use on another player such as CLee. So they can potentially sign CLee and match Asik.

I would imagine its because the Knicks are more likely to match. If they don't match then we would be forced to clear up cap space to offer the 2nd guy.

Its the same contract as Asik. If we get Lin, then his number would be averaged out over all 3 years ($8.36m every year) even though the actual ammount of money we pay him every year would be different. If Knicks match then his cap hit would be what they have to actually pay him every year ($5m $5.2m $15m).

So correct me if I am wrong, but we will expect to find out about Lin on Monday, which is when we will sign Asik. Then, we will have to wait until Thursday to find out about him. Finally, we can then finalize a trade with Orlando? So basically, it will be the end of next week before we can start realistically expecting a Howard deal to be done?

quite honestly what hurts is reading alot of ignorant opinions from fans who like to jump off the roof the minute they hear something... lin counts for 8.3 million all 3 years for the rockets if knicks dont match however if they match he counts for 15 million FOR THEM ONLY in year 3.. this way morey entered into a win win situation .. he either gets his guy or quite effectively takes knicks out of the competition for top FA bc lin will cost them upwards of 45 million dollars with penalties (3 dollars for every dollar you are over)

so really this is a very smart move by morey and you really have to understand the rules to get it..
