Why do people say "you know" so often and in random points in a sentence? What's happened to the art of stopping your sentence and thinking about what to say next, instead of filling it with this generic phrase? I notice it's particularly bad with not so articulate young NBA rookies who struggle in front of cameras. "You know...we played to win tonight...you know...it's a team sport and we passed to each other...you know..."
This is nothing new and they exist in all languages. What's worse? "Y'know," "like," "uhh," or "umm." Pick your poison.
"I mean" is another popular one in interviews currently. At least with "you know" it seems like they're trying to keep you engaged in conversation. It's not as bad as using "..." in place of all punctuation.
I work in science and I've heard enough "basically"s to know that whoever uses it doesn't know what they're saying.

It drives me nuts when people use it over and over again. Same goes for "like". Even if I use one of those in a proper context or once in an entire conversation I feel dirty.

Tebow is the worst, he says ummmm way too much in his interviews, dumb jock. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/D0kAqd-gySc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
listen to a Chris Johnson interview: "blah blah blah and things like that. blah blah blah and things like that. blah blah blah and things like that." i use "like" more often than i care to. it annoys myself.
You're all like why are they saying you know, you know, and I'm all like, ummm, why is he all like that?
