Not too worried about the hat unless somebody there confirmed it is a Laker hat. I have a lime green one with a yellow underbill.

    Chad Ford ESPN chat:

    Jake (ATL)

Why is nobody mentioning ATL in the Dwight Howard Sweepstakes?

    Chad Ford (1:03 PM)

Everyone is. They've just been much quieter in doing work behind the scenes. With the Nets out of the picture (at least until Jan. 15 when they can trade Brook Lopez) the Hawks, Rockets and Lakers are the three clear favorites to get Howard. I think the Hawks can put together the most attractive package for Howard if they're willing to throw in Al Horford and Jeff Teague. The question is ... will they give up that much without Howard agreeing to an extension as part of the deal.

    Eric (Orlando, FL )

If you were the Magic GM, Would you have taken the Nets offer? People keep forgetting they were going to be late first round picks.

    Chad Ford (1:05 PM)

No. The late first round picks were fairly worthless. The big question was how the Magic felt about Brook Lopez. If you think he's a Top 5 center in the league and he's worth $60M, then you have to consider it. If you aren't that high on Lopez ... it's a pretty bad offer. I think Lopez is solid, but not worth that money. I think the Hawks, Rockets and Lakers all have better offers.

    Danny (Cleveland)

What exactly are the rockets doing?

    Chad Ford (1:08 PM)

Good question. Right now they are stockpiling assets. Young players, expiring contracts, picks. They are trying to build a package that the Magic can't say no to. Not sure they'll get there, but you can't fault Daryl Morey for trying. If they don't land Dwight, it might be a long year Rockets fans. Then again, if they do land Dwight and he refuses to re-sign in Houston, it could be a long year anyway.

I heard that Orlando wants to see our rookies play in summer league before pulling the trigger on Howard trade

Morey's genius; Dwight Howard trade - no downside

We all know that Morey is willing to trade for D12 with no assurance that Dwight will sign with Houston. Conventional wisdom is that Morey is somehow banking on Dwight taking the money and that eventually when push comes to shove Dwight will resign cos we can give him more money.

Let me put another theory forward, even if Morey knows FOR CERTAIN that Dwight Howard is going to leave, it's still a good trade for us to make.

Worst case scenario is as follows, Howard plays out the year in Houston and makes it clear that he will not sign in Houston under any circumstances.

He is a free agent and he wants to go elsewhere.

He is going to want to go to a big market AND he will want to go to a team that can contend immediately.

We can make it VERY CLEAR to the entire league that we will sign and trade him to any team that can put together the best offer.

    Top destinations are as follows;

    1. Miami - if Miami don't win a championship the next year, no brainer to trade Howard for Bosh + picks

    2. Lakers - if Lakers don't win, double sign and trade for Bynum + other assets

    3. OKC - if OKC don't win and Dwight can be convinced to do the superteam with KD and RW, then a Harden + Ibaka package will work.

    4. Bulls - Bobcats lottery pick + more picks + Noah/Asik

    5. Knicks - depending on Linsanity, Melo is in play here

    6. Celtics - Rondo + picks

There is NO POSSIBLE way that we will be left with nothing if Dwight leaves, so if anything, this trade is a free gamble to see if we can convince him to stay, if he doesn't we will still be able to get assets in return for him.

I think we'd have to sign them before they can play, and once signed they can be traded for at least 30 days?

Dude you make no sense. NEW CBA basically forces us to trade him before the deadline next year if we want compensation. We can't wait around to see if Miami or lakers win a championship.

Not exactly. None of the over the cap teams can sign him outright. If he wants out of Houston to go Miami (shoot me now) or LA, Brooklyn, etc. he has to be traded there via sign and trade. He just won't get as much money as he'd get by signing and staying.

    @MySportsLegion

Is Orlando keeping Dwight allowing Nets to gain leverage on them? Will Houston offer same package at trade deadline for a 3 month rental?

If I'm Rob Hennigan, trade Dwight tomorrow to either Houston, LA or Atlanta. Get value back, don't continue on w/ the circus.

Yep. I'd be agreeable to sending him to the Lakers. No to the Heat, since that LBJ + Howard = next 6 titles.

Unless he truly wants to go to Dallas/ATL, Rockets would be in great position.

McGrady's back problem was "cured" by that German doctor. It was his knee that did him in.

what sucks is how long this dragging out we are missing opportunities on so many players via amnesty and low ball free agents...and veterans willing to play cheap...we could have sold the farm and got howard and built up that way...now we are left with the FA scraps...

For a SnT, Howard will have to agree, right? Again, he will get more money through a SnT then signing as FA outright. But the worst case scenario is that he is willing to take less money to sign with the team he wants. What we can hope for is that the team he wants is also willing to trade us something we want.

There is no team he will want to sign with that is under the cap enough to sign him outright. it has to be through sign and trade.
