Have dvd of this and my boys (ages 6 and 3) love it. I miss the original Loony Tunes. My favorite cartoons right now are Phineas & Ferb, Regular Show and Adventure Time. I love those shows, especially Adventure Time. My oldest is into those and the Lego Ninjago series. He's geeked about the new season. I have never been into anime of any form, ever. My college roommates watched DBZ religiously and I hated every second of it. Cartoons should not be serious.
Those are all awesome shows, especially Adventure Time. It's adult clever without being hipster-pretentious, a pretty amazing feat. I don't consider DBZ 'anime'. It's a kids show that originated in Japan. Anime tends to be more adult, or at least teen oriented with much higher production values and better writing.
For me..Saturday mornings were: Looney Tunes Tom and Jerry Land of The Lost Banana Splits Laff Olympics Justice League Spiderman and SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK.. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3RzN7T5xpVc?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
This new cartoon on Disney called Gravity Falls is HILARIOUS. Also, SpongeBob SquarePants on Nickelodeon. REGULAR TV Saturday Morning cartoons are not bueno.
Ugh, I just HATE this sentiment and will never understand the relative few (thankfully) that have it. So great "serious" series like Batman: TAS, X-Men, Justice League, Avatar, Gargoyles, Spectacular Spider-Man, etc just shouldn't exist then? Legendary "serious" anime series like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Ghost in the Shell, Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist, Evangelion, Death Note, etc are just a waste of time? Why? Simply because they're a series of drawn frames rather than live action stills? The emotional tone and range of animated series should be just as wide and varied as any other form of art. I can understand if you don't prefer serious animated shows, but the statement "Cartoons should not be serious" is just utter bullsh-t and pisses me off to no end. I realize I have a stake and bias in this due to my 2nd career as an aspiring comic/graphic artist and writer, but I can't be the only one that finds that statement ridiculous.
I use Photoshop (still the best, to me), Illustrator, and Inkscape for coloring, shading and general touching up, but for the actual initial drawing, always good old pencil/paper sketch and cleaning with India Ink pens/markers. I always recommend paper for the actual drawing because those little minute "imperfections" that drawing programs usually eliminate are actually a large part of the artist's style and personality. Not necessarily a bad thing to keep them in.
I'm not up so much on the new stuff out there, but I agree with some of the sentimentality that DVR, Netflix, and Torrenting changes the scope of Saturday Morning Cartoons. You really can watch anything you want, including large backlogs of so many shows. I enjoyed the new Avatar, but that's the only new one I've watched in a while. My 3 year old son just had a Batman themed birthday party, although he thinks Joker is a good guy and gets upset when I tell him otherwise. My 4.5 year old daughter is blowing off the cutesy learn to read phonic books we got her and has requested a Batman reading set after she fell in love with all of the Batman books we gave our son. We ordered that yesterday, and I'm curious how this will accelerate teaching her to read. I'm really looking forward to tackling a long list of shows like Laff Olympics, Gummi Bears, Smurfs, Superfriends, etc. while they are young. It's kind of cool to think about introducing your kids to shows you watched as a kid. When they're a bit older, I can't wait to get them into Batman: Animated Series and all the spin offs. I didn't watch many of those, and I'm now getting caught up with Batman Beyond, which is hella fun. I'm curious about Static Shock, Justice League, and Teen Titans. I've got some others like Thundercats (heard it sucked after the first batch of episodes), Gargoyles (heard it sucked after season 2), Justice League, and Green Lantern on my radar. I'm going to have scope a few of the other shows mentioned to add to the list.
