As risky as Bynum is, I see less hope by doing nothing.

Bynum won't set this franchise back, as he won't cost us a ton of picks and prospects.

Plus he's an even better lock to stay. If he flames out, I still see young talent here to grow. And cap space.

Why? you just got 5 posts disputing "desperation" and when has Morey ever made a desperate deal?

Yes he is. He is going to cost us talent to get him and we will have to take back contracts from Orlando because LA really can't. You then max him out and his knees go to hell.

Bynum absolutely could set this franchise back.

I'm just curious to what LA adds to the deal. Gasol? Seems unlikely to me.

We do have an alternative; we don't have to make the trade. I was under the impression that we couldn't get Bynum without LA getting Howard via a 3-way trade; i.e. making LA better

In any situation we end up with Bynum, we're not going to give up as much of our future, nor as much cap space, as we would with Howard.

    Tankage?

Certainly worst possible outcome is we sign him to a max contract after the season and him blow out his knee.

Not as much, but still a lot. We will have to do the heavy lifting in a three team trade with LA because LA doesn't have anything to give up besides Bynum. And if we are taking Bynum then Orlando still needs to be compensated for Dwight.

    So what is your point...?

I never said we didn't have an alternative.

Isn't this typical in most A level athletes Houston acquires in all sports? Should be used to it by now.

Why are stuffing words in my mouth that I never even stated? Where did I say Howard would sign for $3.5 MM? This is ridiculous. He can get a lot more through sign-in-trade.

This makes total since until you realize this type of abstract thought appears to be beyond Dwight's capacity.

How? How is he going to NY or LA for a lot more than 3.5 million?

The only way I see Bynum setting us back is if he becomes Yao 2.0 and his body breaks down after we give him a max deal.

I don't think he's going to cost us a lot of picks/prospects and cap space (relative to how much we have, which is a LOT, plus Morey is the master cap manipulator and complimentary player acquirer), but him becoming a dead weight on the roster is the biggest risk, IMO.

Orlando feels it can wait. Right now they have the coveted asset that we want. Orlando can get what it wants a few different ways. They aren't "desperate" to unload Howard. We are desperate to get him.

If you don't see that, that you are missing the point. If les is bent on getting D.H. than Morey hands are tied. He's going to make a bad deal to get the guy Les wants. And I can see that happening.

I really think both teams need each other. Houston needs a star player. Magic need to rebuild. No team is offering a better player than Dwight. No team is more capable of absorbing bad salaries and giving up young talent than the Rockets.

Magic will be a bad team this year if they deal Dwight before season and don't get back too many good veterans. Their pick, the Toronto pick, and Lamb would appear to be a decent framework to build a team.
