I think that's a possibility, too. Then again, I'm some clueless idiot on Clutchfans, so he'll probably end up in Milwaukee or something.

The Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic attempted to execute a last-gasp deal that would send All-Star center Dwight Howard to the Nets, but they could not reach an agreement and talks between the two sides have ended, a source familiar with the negotiations said.

Sources said earlier Wednesday that the Nets had decided to "resolve" their situation with Howard by 6 p.m. ET. That inspired renewed talks, in which the Nets offered four future first-round picks, center Brook Lopez and power forward Kris Humphries in sign-and-trade deals, the source said. The offer was rejected by the Magic.

"We've moved on. It just got to a point where we couldn't keep going back and forth with Orlando. They had about 14 days to do something and didn't. We just had to move on, and we felt that way this morning," a Nets source told ESPNNewYork.com's Ian O'Connor.

The source said Lopez was close to signing an offer sheet, which would have prevented his inclusion in a Howard trade, anyway. One source close to the process told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the Portland Trail Blazers and Charlotte Bobcats had informed Lopez's camp that they are prepared to sign him to four-year-maximum offer sheets.

"Brook had two offer sheets (from Portland and Charlotte) and was about to sign one of them. We couldn't wait anymore," the source told O'Connor.

While the Nets consider their pursuit of Howard over, Magic general manager Rob Hennigan said in a news conference Wednesday that he is still talking to Brooklyn, characterizing the talks as being in "a stationary position."

"We are not coming up with any arbitrary timelines," Hennigan said, adding that reports that talks between the Nets and Magic have been suspended are "not accurate."

Lopez's agent had been pushing the Nets to either sign Lopez themselves or do a sign-and-trade by the end of the day, sources told ESPN.com's Chad Ford. General manager Billy King was expected to meet with the agent for Lopez in Los Angeles on Wednesday, sources said.

When asked if Howard will remain with the team, Hennigan said: "We want our players to be invested in the organization."

Hennigan confirmed he spoke with Howard on Wednesday, and said the conversation was "positive" and "conversational," despite reports that the GM had told Howard the talks were dead.

A league source familiar with the Magic's position said, "From the beginning they were going to do a deal that works best for their team. It just isn't on the table."

Well, they have Gerald Wallace too, as well as the young Brooks, Humphries, and the foreign forward they just brought over whose name escapes me. I think you are right about the Heat being better still, but they're talent fits together better than that of the Heat -- there just isn't as much of it.

Well it's New York, I'm sure the fans will be happy with just giving a good effort and playing a good game.

Someone please explain me how the Nets signing Lopez now means that Dwight will not be moved.

I'm sick of hearing the media paint this picture that Orlando is making sure Dwight gets what he wants and if not, it goes on hold.

Teams like Houston would be a gamble. But Orlando is capped out, no room for improving anytime in the future. At least until their bad contracts expire.

Lopez was the central part of the trade. Giving him the max contract now means they cannot trade him until January.

Orlando is ready to part ways -let's just say he did stay with them
Their last GM put the. In no mans land with some bad contracts
Good try on the negative jinx-he's leaving Orlando neither one him or the FO
Enjoy him. He's put the Magic as a joke for the league to see.

Well, they may know what they want and it might just be they have to wait about 27 days before he is allowed to be traded to them:

Sure they do. Orlando knows they aren't going to get our best offer (or anyone else's) if it looks like they HAVE to get rid of Dwight. Making it look like they're in no rush to deal him is their best chance of shaking more goodies loose, or getting another team involved to bid up his price.

I laughed at Charlotte offering a max deal to Brook Lopez. God what a terrible organization.

Watching Frank Isola and Adrian Wojnarowski on NBC Sports... both thought the Rockets were in a very good spot. Isola thought the Rockets had the picks and cap space that the Magic need.

Isola on who wins with Lopez signing with the Nets:
"There are a few winners here, #1, would be the Knicks, because I think they were a little worried Dwight Howard could end up in Brooklyn. You have to look at the Lakers as being in play because of Andrew Bynum. Obviously the Rockets, they've been assembling assets. And if you're Rob Hennigan, the new general manager at 30 years old, your signature move is going to be "What are you going to do with Dwight Howard?" You have to get back assets. And if you're trading a franchise player, you're not just giving them away for anybody. You need to get back expiring contracts and draft picks. Also, don't rule out -- I understand it's in the same division -- but the Atlanta Hawks have been doing everything they can to get involved with Dwight Howard as well."

    Isola on the Rockets:
"I would roll the dice because first of all, $20M is how much more he can make by signing with the team he is traded to. That's number one. Number two, if you go to a place like Houston, there's no state taxes in Texas. Look at the history of Houston -- Moses Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, Ralph Sampson, Yao Ming -- it's been a franchise that has been built around centers. Why couldn't they develop a pretty good team with him there? Why not bring him in, see how it works, and worse comes to worse, you end up trading him."

    Wojnarowski on the Rockets:
"If Houston gets him, they're going to keep him. The key here is that the places Dwight wanted to go to get his maximum sneaker contract from Adidas, LA and New York, these teams are all capped out -- both teams in New York and certainly the Lakers in LA-- they can't sign him as a free agent next summer. That's mainly why the Rockets are willing to roll the dice and bring him in."

Bucher: Nets talks are dead. Earliest to trade Lopez would be Dec 15. Talks broke down because what the Nets were offering wasn't enough for the Magic. They also wanted to send out Quentin Richardson and they did not want Humphries. Nets sensed there was no deal to be made.

    Lakers in pole position?

They are as far as being able to deal for Dwight. Dwight's stance has not changed, in light of today's news. Magic are now faced with trading Howard for Bynum, who also said he won't sign an extension. Basically trading one big man for another unless they get the Rockets together. That 3 team deal from last night, that won't work for LA either. Magic are back to the drawing board at this point and dare I say, I don't know for a fact, but talk about him trying to challenge the legality of him opting in for this year that he was given improper inducements. My guess is they'll pursue to get out of his contract.

    ------------------------------

Rockets seemingly have the pieces yet at the same time can't seemingly get Orlando to listen or consider or dare I say take the offer. Hmm... On a different note, maybe the Magic want to dump all those contracts on Houston too? (Earl Clark, Duhon, Quentin and Jason Richardson, and Howard)
