Wouldn't they have to give him 5 year max or risk him bolting to Portland?

Lopez is a MLE player about to get paid like a max player, I don't think he's getting screwed either way

They will match whatever Portland offers him. They can't offer him more than a 4 year max deal.

ok..thanks for clarifying. But then why sign him to a 5 year max at all? I doubt Orlando wants that either.

Fair enough. You are right. By screwed I meant that I doubt that 5th year that NJ is holding over him is going to materialize.

    <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Correction from earlier reports: Brook Lopez can't be traded until Jan. 15, not Dec. 15, if he signs with Brooklyn - <a href="http://t.co/ZHJdabU5" title="http://bit.ly/Oy4e9B">bit.ly/Oy4e9B</a></p>&mdash; Sam Amick (@sam_amick) <a href="https://twitter.com/sam_amick/status/223136529487372288" data-datetime="2012-07-11T19:27:48+00:00">July 11, 2012</a></blockquote>

There you have it. Jan 15th is the soonest Lopez can be traded if he signs.

Like I said, I doubt they will. They are saying they will to him now so he doesn't go sign an offer sheet with another team that limits him to 4 years. But, if the deal with Orlando falls through I bet the Nets tell him to take the 4 year deal anyway.

It's not a contractual deadline. It was just a time thrown out there. Do you really think the Nets are just going to walk away just because it went past 3 pm?
