    1. Howard should not sign an "extension" with any of the teams if he's traded there. There is a difference between an "extension" (which can be signed before a contract has expired) and a new contract with the same team (to be signed after a contract has already expired).

Keep in mind that after a player is traded, for 6 months, he cannot sign a contract "extension" for more than 2 extra years at 4.5% raise. After 6 months, he can extend for 3 extra years at 7.5% raise.

Now, why would he sign a 2 year extension (or even a 3 year extension) when he can get 4 or 5 years in free agency? The only reason you'd do it is if you are REALLY worried about getting injured in the upcoming season (or what remains of it at the time the extension is inked).

For example: Chris Paul has decided to not sign a contract extension with the Clippers and instead enter free agency next season. He made clear this doesn't mean he's leaving in 2013, just giving himself better #s on contracts.

    2. As far as new contract goes, Dwight Howard can re-up with the team that he's on for 5 years with 7.5% annual raise but can only get 4 years with 4.5% annual raise from an "outside" team. For him it's something like 5 years, $117M guaranteed or 4 years, $87M guaranteed. The difference is aroun $30M in guaranteed money in terms of staying with his own team or signing with an outside team with sufficient cap room (or even going to such an outside team via S&T).

The Nets and the Lakers, however, will most likely not have sufficient cap room given their hefty current payroll and the low probability that they can actually dump massive amount of contract $ to get low enough below the cap in order to sign Dwight to even an "outside max" deal (which would require $20.5M in cap room). So, the kind of pay cut Dwight will need to take in order to just sign with these teams will be even more massive-- he'll have to take something like 3 years, $10M total. And that's just not happening.

We may be the ugly chick but we have BANK! It's up to Howard to marry us and be set for life or marry the friend of his love (because BK can't sign him outright) who will make him work for a living.

To keep alive chances to get Howard, Billy King can't let Lopez sign sheet. Nor can he let him walk if Nets don't get DH. Has to pay Lopez

Brooklyn is far from done. The 4/58 offer is exactly what Orlando would pay Lopez - there's no news, there. They're just using the "5th year hangup" as a stalling technique to let the Orlando negotiations play out.

Dwight is a diva, but I don't think he's completely stupid. The confidence from his camp is alarming. Between that and the @MagicInsider tweets this morning... I have a sick feeling that DeVos made Dwight a promise back in March.

It's possible that "re-engaging" Brooklyn is Hennigan's way of eventually telling Dwight/DeVos that he did all he could. It's also possible that "engaging" the Rockets/Lakers yesterday was an act to squeeze every nickel out of Brooklyn that he can.

I hope I'm wrong on this. But the more I read about DeVos and his relationship with Dwight, it makes me wonder if he can pull the trigger on something Dwight would hate. Hope I'm being paranoid.

Rockets are like the ugly chick,...

that knows how to cook, clean, have good sex and if you decide you want all of that Dwight, you will also win championships.

Come do us Dwight, and produce a championship.

Dwight being traded here and not signing an extension only means I won't buy a Rockets shirt with his name on it. Other than that, I'll be rooting for him while he's a Rocket.

I think you're wrong about that. If they loved Lopez enough to sign him to a max contract they would have finished the trade last week but they didn't which shows me they don't necessarily view Lopez like the view Bynum who they said they preferably wanted.

If DH does come here but won't resign with us, can we send him somewhere else with a s&t so we can get some value out of him and he can get more money?
