Lots of things can happen between now and then though. Other teams could clear cap space by trading for expiring contracts at the deadline.

Alternative.......get Howard... if he wants to stay great!! If not then ship his but to L.A.....

We rape l.a. for everything in the process plus get bynum...

Which brings me to the conclusion... Fu?! Howard's feelings!! Get him and trade him for what we gave up.win, win situation!!

Do you really want an unhappy Dwight Howard given the media circus, and all of the damage you've just seen him do in Orlando?

Its better than Bynum eventually killing someone on the court and getting banned for life. Seriously. His elbows have done serious damage to people like Gerald Wallace; knocked out his lung.

Thats what everyone said about Lebron. Good luck if Morey does it. I am sure you will get to say I ate crow for one season at least.

They still wouldn't have the ability to offer the most money.

Jopatmc -- I gotta give you a ton of credit for your consistency and strength of conviction on this issue. Repped, regardless of how it turns out. Need more posters like you.

Does anyone think that it makes a difference to Howard that (i) he will be hailed as THE franchise player in Houston, (ii) there's a long legacy of elite centers in Houston, and (iii) he will be the face of the 2012 All Star game?

Howard strikes me as the kind of guy that would care about all those things, particularly (i) and (iii).

    Yeah???????

Name them Orem. Who's gonna trade away players for expriing contracts so they have the cap space to sign Dwight next offseason???

(The more you try to come up with something, the more far-fetched it becomes.)

That's true and that means there is a CHANCE Howard would re-sign here. But just a chance. Not a guarantee. LeBron and Bosh both took less money to go to Miami from their teams.

Let's be realistic we're not going to have a lot of team left over after this trade. We may not be better than 8th seed or so even with Howard. He could very easily be unhappy enough to walk.

If it's between Bynum with him signing on the dotted line guaranteeing he will sign an extension, and Howard as a crapshoot, I take Bynum. If we sit down with Howard and go over his options and he says "****. Well... okay... fine." Then we go for Howard.

Brooklyn is the main team I'm worried about doing that. I'm sure they would trade anything and everything in order to pair Dwight with D-Will.

They have nothing the Rockets would want.
Unless they trade Deron Williams, which would defeat the whole purpose.

They have no assets, no picks, nothing.

It would be impossible for them to trade players to get themselves under the cap to offer a deal to Dwight unless he is willing to take a seriously reduced contract.

But see that's the thing with (ii) ... He wants to go somewhere where he can be the start of a team's legacy. (I guess big-man wise). It was in an article awhile back he said that he didn't want to go to L.A. Lakers because of the legacy of big men there that have played for that organization already... Same with Houston.

I don't know. Maybe it would make a difference once he got here and experienced that, and a lot more about playing in Houston. The trick is getting him here in the first place, and without giving up the farm to do it. I would much rather have Howard and take that chance, but if Morey grabs Bynum instead, with an extension, I think we'd have to give it up for the guy. Morey would finally have his home run.

There's a better chance that Dwight re-signs a birds rights contract here than there is that Bynum signs an extension. If we trade for Bynum, we gotta give him the same 5 years.

And there's a much greater chance that Bynum will underperform his contract over the next 5 years than there is that Dwight will walk away from $57 million next offseason to go play in Dallas or whatever other town you can figure out will have the cap space to sign him outright.

Dwight is very limited in his options if he comes to Houston.

He will remain a Rocket. I just dont understand any other thought process. At the least, the odds are in the Rockets favor. Obviously, it may not turn out that way, but to completely dismiss the high chance that Dwight would resign is irrational.

And all the posters here saying Bynum is on track to be better than Howard are just straight delusional.

If they can move Johnson & Wallace they could do it.
