Why not? Just make sure you complete the trade first thing on July 11th, then surprise the Knicks with the Lin offer sheet. Hilarity ensues.

This means NY is matching Lin's offer isn't it...

NYK have no other means of obtaining Camby. Given that NYK only have the tax-payer ($3M) mid-level exception with which to sign outside FA and they have already used it to get Jason Kidd, the most they could pay Camby without HOU's help is the veteran minimum. Camby will be able to get significantly bigger offers else where (from teams with cap flexibility like Dallas and from other teams willing to do a S&T like Miami or Brooklyn). So, if NY doesn't give up some assets for a S&T, chances are Camby ends up in Miami or Brooklyn and not NY.

Y'know, Morey might still want to do business with some of the other GM's in the league again after this trade, so being a complete and total douche to the team that just did you a solid seems like a pretty unwise strategy..

..now, I would do that to Portland or Utah in a heartbeat, but NYK have been pretty much willing to deal with us, and the deals seem to have been fair and even-handed, so I really wouldn't want to deliberately screw them like that..I know you're kidding anyway..

But what about this: Leave Lin be, we know NYK will match anyway.

As the season progresses, and Kidd eventually takes over, Lin's value will probably actually drop, and if Morey still thinks as highly of him in mid-season as he does now, I suspect we might be able to deal with NYK then, and still get Lin, and most likely wind up paying less anyway.

    Maybe, maybe no?

Addendum: and by that I mean, we would have to rescind the offer to Lin, thus allowing NYK to actually sign him for less. Otherwise, the deal would match what we already offered, correct?

I doubt the Rockets actually rescind a Lin offer that they had Lin come over to Houston to negotiate. If you are worried about hurting the good will toward the team, the worst thing you want to do is to go back on a promise, even an oral one, to a player that cost them $. Hell, Charles Barkley is still angry at the Rockets for allegedly screwing him out of $3M.

Now as far as the Knicks go, the rumored contract offer is between Lin and Houston, the Knicks have no part in this. HOU and Lin are free to change their mind as long as they both agree to do so. Nobody promised the Knicks anything. As for "screwing with them": that's just the way the CBA is set up, the only way you get an unrestricted FA out of another team is by "screwing with" that team and making it undesirable for that team to match the contract. All's fair.

So, if my math is right, with this trade the Rockets could now create roughly $11M in cap space by renouncing Lee's bird rights and waiving Simpson & Fortson.

Of course you don't want to renounce Lee's bird rights, so you can gather more assets by trading him like you did with Camby.

Now, if you were to complete a sign&trade with Lee before July 11 with the Celtics for Moore and Williams (both fully unguaranteed) and Dooling for somewhere between $2-2.5M, you could keep (nearly) all the non-guaranteed guys as trade chips and still sign either Lin or Asik to their offer-sheet.

You think Morey is gonna sign one guy on July 11 (probably Lin, as he's more likely to get matched), wait the 3 day period and then do whatever it takes (nothing if the Lin match), to create the room to sign the other guy (Asik)?
Because, to me, it sure would seem the way to go here.

Yup I agree. Two second rounders alone for Camby is a steal.

Also needs to work on shot blocking and post defense. Not to mention he needs a nastier disposition.

That's where you and I disagree.

It's so obvious whats really going on here, there have been verbal agreements made between teams like spiderwebs.

Jameer Nelson is re-signed, 4 hours later Lowry is dealt for a 1st. Morey knows what is going on in Orlando just like NYK FO knows. Today we hear Orlando might be coming around to the Nets offer and boom 8 hours later NYK just helped the best team to steal Dwight from Brooklyn and in exchange saved themselves from having to swallow a bigger poison pill.

Do you think Morey is just that likeable and Camby that valuable for this trade to happen the way it did. I don't. Something's up and NYK and Houston are in on it. Let's hope Danny Ainge joins the metaphorical circle jerk.

My only real point is: This trade has a good amount to do with Lin and even Dwight.

Camby is that valuable. Other teams are lined up to pursue him: Nets, Heat, Spurs, Mavs all want him. And the Knicks cannot get him without Houston's help. Houston charged an appropriate price for such help-- couple 2nd rounders and guys who are never gonna see a minute of playing time in NY.
