I actually feel BigTexx's pain on this one. I've gone on several business lunches where the VIP of the lunch has orchestrated the idea of sharing. Of course, I can say no thanks, but then I look like a douche when everyone else at the table is game.
sharing restaurand food?! sounds like you're hanging with a bunch of evil liberal commies! No one gets close to my food with one execption, if it's a chick. But even then, i still hesitate! Sharing dessert is ok though.
It also depends where you're eating. It's basically the ideal option at any Asian restaurant (Chinese, Thai, Indian/Paki, Japanese). Korean and Vietnamese...not as much depending on what your tastes are.
White? No but seriously, I can't understand how you can see things so narrowly; how could sharing food for one meal piss you off so much? A normal open-minded person probably would want to understand the merit to why so many cultures share as a norm, or at least just tolerate it and not have to rant on a website.
Why is it the "ideal option" for those cuisines? Because the portion sizes are too big for one person? I mean, I get it when it comes to sides -- that's fine to share those. But otherwise, I don't know why people don't just order food for themselves. I've eaten at plenty of Chinese, Thai, Indo/Pak, and Japanese restaurants, and I like to order for myself and eat when I ordered.
so then basically it's ok to share a cfan account, but at the dinner table jorge is clearly put on notice "don't touch my freedom fries, brah!!"
Grew up in and living in a Southeast Asian country right now, the Philippines to be exact. Eating at Chinese, Thai, Japanese restaurants had been common for me too. From what i experienced, i can say that we are a people who tend to share what we have, especially when it comes to food, but it doesn't mean we don't know how to order food specifically for our own selves. But you know the amazing and odd thing about it is that even if all of us in the table got to order food for ourselves, We still end up sharing with each other. And it's not even a forced thing for us, or like someone has to say "Hey let's start sharing".
Family style dining is my preferred way to eat. I probably wouldn't have been as big a fan a decade ago, but my wife has worked at a number of small plates restaurants where sharing is encouraged. You get to taste more things this way. I hate when a menu looks incredible and I only get to sample a small portion of it. My wife and I always wind up with a six or seven course meal because we swap plates halfway through each course. Occasionally, we'll have a hankering for one dish that the other isn't interested in at all, and we'll each get our own plate that course. But that's rare. Dining is a fun negotiation for us as we whittle down what we want. Bigger groups are easy because you can order so much more, but I don't suggest that unless I know the whole group is in for it though. My dad, my wife, and I will share plates when we go to eat, but my mom gets her own food and isn't keen on sharing any of it. Obviously this is only for some restaurants. Tapas styles, ethnic places where they serve in large communal bowls, and fine dining in a no larger than 4 top group lend themselves to this. If I was going to a pub with a group of guys, I wouldn't offer to split my burger to have half of their wrap. If someone wants to get an appetizer for the group to split, I'm cool with that.
So you just harpoon food off of somebody else's plate without asking? I'd never make it there -- I'd be overturning tables if somebody did that to me.
Why would you assume that we'd just "harpoon" food from another man's plate? . I know i said that sharing is not something that we force to happen, but it doesn't mean we don't have table manners either.
I love sharing food, my wife not so much. At certain places I can't imagine not sharing, just because the food is so amazing and I feel that it's meant to be shared. Uchi/Uchiko for example. Would hate to go there and only get to taste 3 or 4 things.
You forgot that bigtexx = He can't seem to grasp simple social interactions such as a person asking "Hey dude that pasta looks great could I try a bit?" or "Dude this pasta is delicious you guys should try some of it."
i don't mind sharing food at all. i do mind when one of the party thinks his $25 is enough to cover his $16.99 entree, $2 drink, and $4.99 desert. i hate eating out with parties of 6 or more, especially with strangers.
