there is simply way too much wrong in this to even try to respond with rational thought, as clearly rationality would not be welcome

Ziggy is 100% correct. These off duty officers are paid to be there by the club in order to PREVENT matters from escalating NOT to go gang tackle a famous patron that frequents the bar on multiple occasions.

To be perfectly honest I don’t like the idea of cops moonlighting at bars/clubs in the first place. They should not be able to utilize the badge on a second job. If they take private contractor roles they should be nothing more than a glorified security guard/mall cop. NO BADGE NO GUN. I regularly see officers taking shots handed to them from bouncers/club employees.

I had two friends get beat down by police in cypress for a similar misunderstanding as what is being described with Peterson. One was charged with resisting and evading arrest. Those charges have been dropped and he’s sitting pretty with a fat lawsuit on his hands. These dudes got beat up outside of lux in the vintage park before they closed down.

I completely fail to understand the lack of respect you and Ziggy have for cops. They take a crappy salary to protect and serve ungrateful people like you. And when they actually do their job properly, they take more crap because they didn't some rich guy off. If anything you should be happy justice is served regardless of stature or wealth. There's been a whole god damn societal movement against 1%er's getting special treatment.

Yes, cops are there for prevention. What happens if prevention (gasp) doesn't work? It's better to have someone in place who can actually do something.

I've stopped trying to understand people's irrational thoughts long ago.

They do not take on a crappy salary. That is not the reason people become cops.

I'd consider it a crappy salary since they're basically putting their lives in danger every time they put on their uniform. Why do you think most have to take on second jobs?

Teachers, Police, Firemen and EMT's should all make considerably more than they do.

Cops make a pretty good living. Especially the benefits.

I agree they should be paid more, but I also feel the entry standards should be higher and qualifications to remain employed should be enacted.

The side gigs they take pay out more than their regular job, which is why so many of them take them. It's not that they're starving for cash, it's just too much money for most of them to pass up for easy labor.

I gotta imagine the club owner's portrayal of this event is the most accurate. He knows he has security cameras in his place and if he lied it would be obvious as soon as that footage is reviewed/released. Sounds like AP did something really stupid. Be interesting to see Goodell's reaction to this. AP is not your typical no-goodnik. He might just get off with a fine.

Surprised the footage (either from the security camera or from a cell phone) has not hit the interwebs yet.

HPD Wont even let this go to court. They'll drop the charges and give Petterson an honorary citation.

They're off-duty, they're just bouncers. Also, when you're friends with 2 cops and you hear what goes on and see how they change - you get a different perspective on how things really are...

I don't see how they did their jobs in this situation. A job well done in this instance would be calmly and submissively disarming the heated situation, not having a pee-pee size contest / "oh noooo you didnnnn'" moment.

    I don't think that's the way off-duty works.

Exactly. If a club wanted a bouncer, they would hire a bouncer. If they want a stronger enforcement presence, they hire an officer. Club owner's don't dictate how an officer conducts himself when they hire him. IOW, if you push an officer in uniform, you are going to get charged because, well, no one will ever get away with pushing a cop in uniform.

I'm shocked AP is taking it to this level. I know he has a clean-cut reputation, but one drunk and disorderly is hardly worth making this a media circus.

Who says they didn't try? You make it sound like they walked up and started billy-clubbing AP immediately. You give a drunk guy one chance to leave, which they did. When he got aggressive they responded in kind. How is that a pissing contest? Arresting a drunken guy is not a hostage negotiation.

Good luck HPD, before this is over with you will be lucky to still have a job.

Since when did clubs or bars hire off-duty cops? I've seen security and HPD out at clubs...not off-duty cops wearing street clothes.

And it's AD for All Day. Not AP :p

I thought many times, even if they were off-duty, they still wore their uniforms. Like those cops who are directing traffic out of office buildings, aren't they doing a side job hired by the building? Or am I way off here?

I think you're right. It's up to an officer whether they go in-uniform or not while off-duty. Depending on the side gig, the uniform might make the job easier or harder.

They still wear the unis. HPD lets them do it to offset their low pay. It's a nice gesture but shouldn't be legal IMO. They wear their uniforms to strip joints. If an NBA player did that they'd get in trouble.
