You mean how McHale took Adelmans soft role players and ended up with just as good a record even though McHale doesn't want any of those players? And JVG? There is a reason he is in the TV booth and not an NBA coach. He doesn't like coaching todays players like Stevie "I'd rather go the football game" Franchise, or Kyle "I'm the starter and play my style of offense" Lowry). JVG is more old school like McHale. He doesn't put up with insubordination like a Lowry or Martin type "todays player". Or a Dwight Howard type who thinks he owns the franchise. JVG would fire those guys as well.
Oh, and by the way, McHale not only inherited those Adelman players but didn't have a normal training camp or preseason to install his style of play due to the lock-out. Give him a chance to have his players and have a normal training camp and pre-season. You are judging him much too harshly for whatever reason or pre-conceived notion you have. McHale is a Top 50 All time player, he deserves his chance before you cut him down.
stop making up stuff. JVG never had any problems coaching anyone and Francis certainly didn't run him to the booth.
Actually, he stated on many occasions how difficult todays star players were to coach (ie pain in the arse). Thats why I brought it up. One of my friends was JVG's neighbor here in Houston and he mentioned this fact as well. Why is he not coaching any more if he is such a "current players" coach who understands their feelings? Why bring up this thread to fire McHale and bring back JVG if JVG also wants to coach more old school type no-nonsense hard-nosed players? They are more the same than different.
Even publicly available per wiki, how JVG couldn't put up with Stevie Franchise bullcrap. Stevie lied to JVG about leaving the team to attend a NFL playoff game. JVG suspended him. That was his insubordination. Along with his refusal to run JVG's offense like Lowry pulled on McHale. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Francis Rockets head coach Rudy Tomjanovich stepped down in 2003, the team selecting ex-Knick coach Jeff Van Gundy as his successor. Unfortunately for Francis, Van Gundy's coaching style did not fit the speedy point guard's style of play. Even though Francis made the All Star game for a third straight year his stats declined in 2003–04, dropping from 21.0 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 6.2 APG to 16.6 PPG, 5.5 RPG, and 6.2 APG. The team, however, made the playoffs for the first time since 1999, which would prove Francis's only post-season experience. Despite his averaging 19.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg, and 7.6 apg, the Rockets lost to the heavily favored Los Angeles Lakers, in five games. As Francis' relationship with Van Gundy deteriorated it was apparent that the Rockets wanted to go in a different direction. While the coach sought to focus the team's offense on Rockets player Yao Ming, the Rockets ended up trading Francis, along with his best friend on the team Cuttino Mobley as well as Kelvin Cato, for Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, and Reece Gaines.
just stop please. JVG was ready to re-up with the Rockets super-bowl or no. its the Rockets that decided to go in another direction. McHale wasn't my preferred choice but he's the man now. not losing any sleep over him.
By the way, JVG also had major issues with the PF Maurice Taylor and Eddie Griffin, with their styles, dope smokin, drinkin and general laziness and bad attitudes. Those were high value free agents and draft picks we comitted much resources to that never panned out.
Yes, JVG would have stayed (good coach), but he deported Stevie, Maurice, and well we know what happened to Eddie Griffin RIP. JVG would never want to coach this team of role players.
ico, name one coach of JVG quality who would want to coach the Rox with this lineup with no stars and limited 2nd tier role players? JVG would not come here, neither would the other Van Gundy, Adelman, or Pat Riley, or any other experienced coach of that caliber. I'm glad McHale isn't scared to take the challenge. He has a lot to offer. And a lot to learn as well.
Mchale sucks. His rotations suck, never makes any adjustments. Guarantee that he will be fired at one point of time with the rockets
I love how people keep bringing down JVG when he's a proven coach, finals appearance and playoff success. McHale has nothing but sweet stories to tell. I'd rather McHale be a personal trainer or some motivator like deepak chopra. when have you guys ever watched an epic mind game playoff series where McHale is talked about as a great coach? ummmm... never. stop defending him, just cause he's the current coach.
I'm not digging McHale, but I'm not sure he's not going to work out, either. OTOH, I have always been a huge JVG fan. Next time we're looking for a coach, I'd love for him to come back here.
I just want to know what good did he do with minnesota? Why would u want a franchise that is way below us used up garbage?I miss rudy T and JVG.
