For religious reasons, I haven't had a drink in over 30 years. I am also as big an anti-drunk driving zealot as a person can be and think it's a shame penalties aren't more severe here.

But for Iran to sentence people to death solely for consuming alcohol is barbaric. You can rationalize this atrocity all you want and I guess doing so makes you feel better. But comparing this to murder and rape makes me think you have been drinking.

Just so you know, I've traveled around the world to every continent and have experienced a good many cultures. I understand there are different value systems in different places. But any system that imposes the death penalty just for consuming alcohol is indefensible.

FWIW, I am not a Muslim but work for a company based in a Muslim country and am proud to do so.

You sir are a complete idiot. I see no way how rape, murder or other crimes that result in death in the US are equal to having a drink of beer. Just the fact that you can convince your self that they are equal is alarming. This is more about Iran and many countries in the middle east being horrible regime with laws from the dark ages. That also plays hand in hand with ultra conservative Muslims who want no change and don't realize that the prophets hadiths(teachings) were for those individuals 1400 years ago, and many are just not applicable in today's day and age. And for all those who enjoy bashing one religion over another, once you get past all the propaganda and put aside few differences you see the many similarities between all three Abrahamic traditions. Just respect all, be a good individual and practice what you please. And FWIW I am Muslim, and don't enjoy people like you making it seem like its justifiable to kill someone for having alcohol.(I am Muslim and choose not to drink)

What does that have to do with an execution for consuming alcohol? Do you think a high drinking related death rate would justify this death sentence in any way, shape or form?

Bolded the worst line in this rant. Men judging men. Seems counterintuitive of anything I've learned though 'religious' studies. You're brainwashed homie.

    You sir are a moron.

I'm a Muslim who drinks moderately. As others have mentioned the Quran was written for people 1400 years ago. And at that time it probably made alot more sense then it does not.

It boggles my mind how people can just follow a book written so long ago. Think Prophet Mohammed would condemn you to hell for having a pepperoni pizza and a beer with your friends at home? lol

I am a Muslim and I don't agree with him. I personally would never drink Alcohol as I consider it sinful and bad for my health. That said, a government can never make people become moral. People should have the right to live their life the way they want as long as they don't harm others - it is called free will. There should be laws against driving while drunk as you could harm others doing so - but beyond that prohibition is wrong and never works...

    It is a question.
Honestly, is the right to consume alcohol worth a million lives? Two million?

I am interested in seeing how effective their methods are?

    I am not justifying anything.
Just want to see their level of effectiveness.

When you say drinking related deaths, I assume you mean drunk-driving related. I would submit to you a gradual increase in the penalty for DWI (DUI) over a 5 year period would accomplish the same thing. If people knew they wouldn't no longer be able to drive as a result, deaths because of DWI would almost disappear. But as a society, we are not ready to make that decision. The death penalty need not be involved.

Muslim here. Not a drinker because the religion forbids it and one who drinks it (even moderately) is technically not a Muslim. Now that doesn't mean he's an apostate that should be killed, oh no no no. He's just committing a great sin that he'll have to deal with the repercussions of on Judgment Day, no need to punish a person here. Warn him, help/advise him, send him to rehab, maybe even go as far as give him an ass kicking if that may set him straight (better than any pain inflicted on him in Hell, right?) but definitely no executing.

What people need to understand is that Shariah Law is supposed to be based on two main authoritative sources of text. The Qur'an and the Hadith (sayings, teachings, actions of Prophet Muhammad (p) during his lifetime). There is NOT a single verse in the Qur'an nor a single mentioning in any of the Hadith that says anyone should be executed for drinking alcohol. So what they are doing in Iran is not "true" Shariah but a mixture of a little bit of Islam and A LOT of whatever the hell they personally feel like doing, regardless of religious rulings.

We will likely never know for sure because most people are complacent about drunk driving. You can't change a societal mentality overnight, but if slowly phased in, I definitely think so.

I was an anti-smoking "crusader" as a teenager. Years later when I first started working, jerks blew cigarette smoke in my face at work. Others sympathetic to me said "Just get used to it, this will never change" and that smokers would always have their way in the workplace and in public.

Things have changed a lot since then.

We've already seen what happens when you ban alcohol, in case you didn't know.

And mcmo's post outclasses anything Hightop has ever written as far as I'm concerned.

Many of the laws in the US are based on the bible. In Iran, their laws are based on Islam. I think that it's just too different of a culture for some people to grasp. While this is extreme it is a law there and if the people want to stay out of trouble, they should follow it. Just like any law here.

Public ploy, typical fascist fear tactics. These guys are being made examples of. This is, according to several friends of mine who visited the country, a rarity, as the law is rarely enforced and is rarely enforced because it's highly difficult to be caught drinking or being drunk in a setting in which officials can encounter you. I don't know how these poor two guys got caught, let alone three times, but their punishment (undoubtedly the first two times they got caught they probably received a fair amount of lashings) is utterly draconic and has no place in the modern world.

As an aside, just to provide some perspective on the matter, the Iranian government is usually very directly involved in the black market flow of alcohol and drugs into the country. Due to their espousal to "Muslim values", they can't rightfully legalize alcohol/opium/meth/ecstasy, but they can sure as hell produce/funnel it and have it flowing through the country on its own! Imagine the prohibition era in America, except the government itself is the mob. Brilliant, really. Don't think that the Islamic Republic actually cares about religion more than money/power, it's simply not the way of government in general (as I'm sure every Mullah came to realize after the death of Khomeini). Ideology is just a way to manipulate the masses, as you can see here.

Thanks for letting me know I am not a Muslim.

Couldn't care less how I am judged when my day comes. Life is too short to worry about ancient rules and laws.

Gonna have a shot of tequila in the name Allah. :p
