Rockets made it easy for the Knicks. According to Kidd, he wants to be a backup and train Lin. So that cash for a starter + the money he brings in? No brainer.
I voted no because I want him, but reality is NY will match it. If they chose not to renew, they might as well sell the team. Penalize, or not on tax, they still make boatloads of money having him as a Knickerbocker.
I have to agree. Morey made it easy for Knicks to match. Why couldn't they at least make 4th year player option? The same principle for financial flexibility will cost them the starter they wanted (Goran) and the Asian magnet they thought would be good replacement. They lost Lowry the player when he went up against the coach, can't have that - unless you fire the coach. This is tank mode hidding in plain view. Maybe they wanted to bring over the PG they saved up in Europe - Llull?
year 4 (at this point) doesn't effect the Knicks cap. Their 3 max contracts all end in year 3 (2014/15). the poison pill of Lin's contract is in year 3 but it's the Knicks so they will most likely match and land the #8 spot in the East for the next 3 years
"It is plausible the Rockets made the offer sheet to Lin, once cut by the Rockets, as a publicity stunt since they are huge in China because of Yao Ming, who retired in 2011. The Rockets also could be doing Yao a favor because he is close to Lin. Grunwald had refused to make Lin an offer until he set his own price tag." If they wanted a publicity stunt, they would have hyped him up more when he was here and kept him. This is a basketball move for a young PG with some upside at a reasonable contract, whether you agree with it or not.
Yes, it's not about how much he's can do on the court. From a marketing standpoint he's worth much, much more. Even 3 years from now when the "poison pill" kicks in he will be worth the tax in Asian revenue. Letting Dragic get away was a huge mistake, even if they somehow do get Lin. Dragic at this point is a proven commodity. 3 weeks of good basketball and an injury needs more proving for me. CAN LIN HOLD UP, what is up with the knee.
A source told Marc Stein that the Knicks will match any offer for Jeremy Lin "up to a billion dollars." Heard it on Mike and Mike this AM.
You can't do that with "decision". In any case calling it Lincision sounds like he's going through surgery on national television (incision).
Why haven't the Knicks matched? And if he's so valuable Why didn't we offer more? Or why not offer more Now? Is it somehow too late? Unsure of the rules on this. Anyone know?
Lin hasn't actually signed anything yet, though he has agreed to our offer. He can't sign until July 11th, I believe. Then the Knicks will have until July 14th to match. The Rockets gave him an offer commensurate with his value to the franchise, maybe slightly higher as I believe Morey has gone on record as saying that you have to overpay RFAs. Hopefully that answers some of your questions.
