Agreed, it sounds like a Plan B desperate move.
    To many mistakes.
It will be very hard be a rocket fan for until the next draft night.

Chess! Really? More like everyone else is playing chess and Morey is in the corner eating glue....

No matter what happens or does not happen, there will be a faction here that will tell you that it's happening or not happening because Morey is smarter than everyone else. Whether he ever makes this franchise a real contender, there will be a group here that will tell you he's the best GM in the game.

On the flip side, there are others for whom he can do nothing right.

Most of the rest of us are in the middle. Most of us, I think, expect that ultimately the general manager of a basketball team will be judged by and held accountable for the actual product he puts on the floor...for actually building a team instead of merely acquiring assets.

What will be interesting to see is how patient Les is with rebuilding. Absent a Howard move, this franchise is rebuilding now, even if that wasn't the plan coming into the offseason.

Just like people hedge their bets in their day to day activities, I have no doubt GMs do too. I can easily see a GM making a run at what they see as value or some nut they want to store for winter but it doesn't preclude their attempt to play bad to get good. I would not think it's a sign that players don't want to play for Morey or for Les or the city of Houston.

Yep. I'm actually ok with that -- at least that's something, rather than being a continuous fringe playoff team. If we can make the play for Howard and go strong, then great. Though, I would think we should've figured that out before reaching bottom barrel point guards.

If not, at least it's moving in a direction that can eventually make us a contender again (developing young guys and getting more high picks in the meantime).

In that context, I'm still not so sure on Lin. But I guess a 3 year contract (4th year team option) just isn't that long. We have to put something on the court, and if we do happen to strike a top 5 pick and there's an elite point guard to be had, having Lin for 1-2 more years won't preclude us drafting him.

I really like Lin...but I'm reasonably certain he'll be back in NY next season. We'll see.

The problem is one of perception. Even if Morey has some master plan, if enough FA's perceive him as a moron who gutted a good team that was one star from contention, why would they come here now to play for rookie/forward junior varsity with a coach who appears to have run off the best player, and a GM who dumped everything to land RFA's who he never actually landed?

    Scary.

Have any of you wise guys ever tried an all-pawn attack in chess... but with 6'9" pawns? Answer that, smarty-pantses.

Exactly...moneyball finds you great role players and second level stars in the K-Mart range. It doesn't help you obtain All-Stars, that takes people skills and the ability to think on your feet. Two things Morey hasn't shown any ability to do whatsoever. This cat has no empathy and no idea what goes on in the real world (can't get on the players level, too elitist). Whenever he's off the computer and meeting in person, the best he can do is Lin? In three years? And still many are still drinking the Kool-Aid.

Same question to you that has been posed to many who have been unable to answer it.

What kind of ball helps you obtain "all stars"?

Moneyball is basically about deploying your resources in the most efficient, productive way possible.

How does taking on horrible unmoveable contracts, overvaluing box-score stats, and making reach draft picks instead of trading up or down come to a better result that attracts "all stars"?

Basically you want to play Isiah Thomas/Micahel Jordan ball where you make moves based on feel & intuition....ok well tell us how it's done then champ.

The current Rockets are still a work in progress. Given this, I think its impossible to draw firm conclusions, not that this is stopping anyone. So far, I would not call what they have done as tanking. They have managed to acquire a future lottery pick while barely missing the playoffs. But, a lot can and probably will change between now and the season opening roster. It is certainly the most interesting off season in team history.

We are tanking. The worse our roster is, the easier it'll be. :)

I wouldn't say he's doing a whole bunch of nothing. Sounds like he's loading for a do-or-die showdown. He's monetized some assets and will trade them for his franchise target. If he fails, we segue automatically to a tank-and-draft strategy.

Seems kinda dumb to criticize him for not having a center or a point guard for next season. As if we wouldn't be allowed to play the games or something. Next season was going nowhere anyway. So, the roster is blowing up and we'll either emerge with a franchise player or a tank-job. Either is better than the status quo. I've got plenty to criticize Morey about, but blowing up the status quo ain't one.

If you are really good, sometimes you can take a queen with pawns.

Sometimes you get slaughtered and then the game resets with a fresh board.

Point being, nobody likes to watch the two horses just going back and forth forever. lol.
