If it's any consolation, I seriously doubt the offer for Lin was the 4 year, $30 million amount being reported by the New York media. If the Rockets would have been willing to overpay THAT much for Lin, I guarantee you they would have paid up for Dragic. I'm thinking that neither Dragic nor Lin got offered anything close to $30-34 million by the Rockets. Patience and prudence. It's painful in the short-term but tends to pay off in the long run. Go ask the Detroit Pistons how they enjoyed those contracts they paid out to Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva a few years ago.
Honestly, sources are Woj and Stein, not hoopsworld. Why shouldn't we believe them? Maybe the Rockets are projecting Lin to be as good or even better than Goran, we don't know.
If the Rockets don't overpay, the odds of NY failing to match fall to about zero, right? So it seems fairly certain that their offer, whatever it is, will be too much.
Bima, I’m sure most agree with this philosophy. But then why sign Asik (same age as Dragic and less upside) for more money per year? If you’re going to be patient and only pay superstars than don’t sign Asik. At over $8M/year Asik better be making a solid contribution next year. Dragic could have been had for less than what Asik got. My mind is officially blown.

Sadly Bima, i thought Dragic was worth $7.5 mil. He was our best player last year. He's only 25, and stil has a high ceiling. Hell, he's only recently got any real playing time having played behind Nash his whole career. We was a good player on both sides of the ball, and versitile enough to slide over to the 2-guard. He WAS worth $7.5, and we should have found a way to keep him if we were set on moving Lowry. I think this will come back to bite us. I truly belive it was one of Morey's biggest mistakes.

No, I do not think that Goran Dragic was worth a four year contract paying him $8.5 million per season AND with a player option. Don't overlook the player option component, as those rarely spell good things for teams (non-superstar players only exercise them if they are not worth the contract value). Look, I really like Dragic. He's a good player who plays hard and should put up some good numbers in Phoenix's open offense. But he got way overpaid. (Un)Fortunately for the Suns, they don't have any other players/contracts worth a damn on their roster (Hornets will match on Gordon) other than Gortat, so they likely won't notice how constraining that contract would have been on a more well-constructed roster. I honestly don't think the Rockets expect Jeremy Lin to be a Houston Rocket this season. This was due diligence on a player they really like. They'll make an offer that will make it painful on the Knicks' tax situation in 2014-15, but I think they expect New York to match. Elite defensive (true!) centers are a rarity in the NBA and command a premium. It's that simple, really. Just look at Marcin Gortat. He's not the greatest player in the world, but go see if Phoenix would be willing to trade him. It's the same reason so many centers get drafted in the lottery despite having no/poor college or international track records. The other positions can be filled much more easily and much more cheaply. Also, don't overlook that fourth year player option in Dragic's deal. I doubt the Rockets would have offered that to Asik even if they could under the CBA rules.
Asik is worth it but Goran is not? I know the size issue but there is what you bring to the table issues and what you have shown and there is no way you can justify what the Rockets are doing.
it's management's responsibility to overpay players who don't want to be here the main problem is that the Rockets are in Houston. players don't want to be here compared to many cities and there's nothing in the franchise or ownership that makes it more attractive. Houston had Yao for all those years propping it up but without a compelling selling point, TBH Houston is just another franchise in a city guys dont want to be who (in their eyes) hasn't done anything in a long time why do you doubt it? there's 0 rationale in that post. as for Lin, he's just another guy who'd rather be in NY, Dallas or Toronto over Houston.
Asik has a better chance of becoming Gordan or Villanueva. And Goran should have been offered a 4/34 deal - that's fair market IMO.
I don't like overpaying guys, but losing Lee first and now Dragic will hurt. Martin's trade value should increase with playing time, but I would have tried harder to move his expiring contract for picks instead.
