The Houston Rockets plan to offer a contract to New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin on Wednesday, according to a report by The New York Post. The Post, citing a league source, reports the Rockets will offer Lin a backloaded deal worth roughly $30 million. According to the same source, the deal would pay Lin $5 million in the first season, $5.2 million in the second, and then would increase to as much as $10 million per year in the third and fourth seasons. "Jeremy Lin's an excellent player," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey told The Post. "We got to know him firsthand when he was with the Rockets early this season. We think he'd make a fantastic addition to our team." While both Lin and the Knicks are hoping for a reunion, sources have told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that if any clubs offer Lin a backloaded contract that pays him an eight-figure salary in the third and fourth years, the Knicks could be hesitant to match the offer. With the new collective bargaining agreement employing a more punitive luxury tax beginning in the 2013-14 season, the Knicks are concerned about the financial ramifications of such a deal. The Knicks can offer Lin a four-year deal worth $24.5 million. In 35 games with the Knicks last season, Lin averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists per game. http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/8130598/report-houston-rockets-offer-jeremy-lin-backloaded-contract
If we can offer Lin $30 mil, but the Knicks can only go as high as $24.5, why are we offering him that much? Am I missing something?
"Jeremy Lin's an excellent player," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey told The Post. "We got to know him firsthand when he was with the Rockets early this season. We think he'd make a fantastic addition to our team." So we cut him? Oops.
The Knicks can only make an initial offer of $24.5 million but they can match ANY offer. If you hope to get Lin then you need an offer that NYK might not match. Does that make sense?
Morey has to know at this point that NY will likely match that. He's probably just trolling their payroll when 2014 hits.
and they'll match this easy. They will say "Dragic we offered $7.5 mil for Lin but we'll still offer $8 mil.
Please read. Then you'll know what the Knicks are up against. http://www.forbes.com/sites/allenst...h-50-million-poison-pill-free-agent-contract/
This article has been up all day. There has been no progress on Lin. Morey is just using this as leverage to get Dragic to come back and realize no one will pay him10 Mill per year. He will sign Dragic, and trade Lowry for another piece.
http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterocke...heir-sights-on-lin-make-him-a-contract-offer/ The Rockets brought Jeremy Lin back to town for a visit on Wednesday. Getting him to stay in Houston will be considerably more difficult and might have gotten tougher even as they met. The Rockets on Wednesday made Lin an offer similar in total value to the contract Goran Dragic turned down. ... The Rockets set their sights on Lin, a point guard they waived after 12 days in training camp, when they failed to reach an agreement with Dragic. A person with knowledge of the negotiations with Dragic said that he would not be back with the Rockets and that Dragic has offers that greatly exceed the Rockets offer. Dragic visited with the Suns on Tuesday. He is also getting interest from the Raptors and Bobcats. ... If Lin agrees, the Rockets would structure Lin’s contract similarly to Asik’s, paying $5 million the first season and $5.2 million in the second season before jumping dramatically in the 2013-14 season. ...
really ???? no nba teams over paying player ???? jose calderon is on 10 million joe johnson will be on 24 million soon
I don't know if any GM would go after another like that, it would definitely tarnish his reputation but I don't know if it was that great to begin with. With that said I hope Morey doesn't feel that way about Lin, if we can get Lowry/Dragic/Lin, Lin is by far the worst of the three.
