umm....there were a bunch of people on this board that criticized as well. the general consensus was lowry & dragic > lin. one good month doesn't warrant a contract like that.
B/c fans like to LIVE in the moment. And Lin was great for "a moment." And by a moment, I mean 15 games. It's the same people who proclaim Lebron is a top 2-3 player of all time after a championship, or Bynum is the best C in the league after 5 great games, or WB is the worst PG of all time after a poor shooting game. You don't give out $30 mil contracts to a guy who had a great 15-game stretch.
Based on your last sentence I would assume that means you didn't want to see the Rockets sign Dragic either.
I didn't say Dragic sucked for 3 years-- he was just inconsistent. He struggled to adjust as a rookie. Was much better the 2nd season. Struggled with his shot and confidence again in PHX in season 3. Was pretty good with HOU after the trade. Then wasn't really great as recently as during the 1st half of last season, when the Rockets often had a hard time sitting Lowry down because they'd struggle with Goran being the lead guard. Of course he's "shown more," and had more NBA minutes, but you still cannot really say that the Dragic we saw for 28 games as a starter is guaranteed to be the Dragic you get every game going forward and he will not again struggle with his shot and his confidence.
I wonder if a three way trade is possible with Nash to NY, Lin to Houston and Dragic to PHX. Maybe we could snag a guy like Robin Lopez as well. Edit: Nevermind, Lin can't sign with NY for the same deal he'd get by signing with Houston.
And that's why many fans (and media) can't grasp the idea of paying Goran the money he's asking, or anywhere close to it. But then to turn around and pay a guy who had less experience as a starter (with more hype) nearly the same amount of money? You don't give out contracts that large to players who basically to "tease" you how great they are/can be. Bad GMs do that. Morey should be more disciplined than this. Ultimately, the point/problem isn't signing any one of these guys. But the price has to be right. Lin is not worth anywhere close the money he's asking/receiving, and neither is Goran.
OK, say Lin is in. Knixies SnT or don't match (I'm a believer in SnT so Knixies get Nash, their target), who backs up JL17? Lowry is (clearly going-going...) gone. Livingston (or is he part of the SnT)? No to AC who was rumored coming last March!
I personally think Lin will be a bust , I never jumped on that Linstanity stuff but I complain that we don't take risk and that's what this is. A safer risk but still a risk. If he can manage more points then turn overs he will exceed my expectations
You are not paying Lin the same amount of money THAT DRAGIC ASKED FOR, you are offering him the same amount THAT THE ROCKETS OFFERED DRAGIC. Dragic asked for more than $10M/year, and the Rockets offered him, it seems, $7.5M or $8M/year. There is a big difference there.
Asking for, and getting are 2 different things. You always want to bargain high my brother, so you can still sign high. Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA Following So Phoenix trades Goran Dragic AND a 1st pick for Aaron Brooks in 2011, and now wants to pay Dragic between $8M-$9M per year to return? Wow. Suns aren't paying him $10m/yr. And even at $8-9 mil/yr, that's still way too high for Dragic, and Woj tweeted. So again, what we're offering Lin is still WAY TOO HIGH.
let me make sure you understand my position. i am not saying dragic is bad. he is good and as good as lin based on all games i watched since they became starter. i don't how many games lin played you watched. i don't want you to tell me you just looked at stats or a couple of national televised games. i had lp. because we didn't have a superstar, i was very interested to see what we could have gotten from lin if we didn't waive him. i watched almost all his games after his debut game. my impression is lin and dragic are on same level. if ppl insist dragic is better, i would say the difference won't be worth 2 or 3 mil extra each year of 3 or 4 year deal. tail-off was caused by woodson and melo. lin was not involved in offense as much as before. his job turned into bringing up the ball and dumpping it to melo. woodson said again and again he would ride on his best player, melo. lin's role was dramatically reduced. it won't surprise me at all lin stats turned to less spectacular. if rox had done same thing on dragic, asking him to bring ball up, dumpping it to other players, and limiting his role in offense, he won't have had spectacular 28 games. clearly, morey wasn't preparing to talk to lin until dragic asked an outrageous price. he had no choice but move on. does morey want to pay that much to lin? i doubt. do you think he has choice? no. lin is a restricted free agent. to get him, you have to come up a back loaded contract to scare of knicks. if you ask me how much both are deserved to get, i would 6-7 mil each year.
if this were what dragic asked, sun and dragic would have been reunited. dragic asked way too much, over 10 mil for sure. it makes no sense to morey to continue their negotiation.
Lowry, when healthy, is better than both, as he also has impact defensively. And that's how much he's worth. Maybe Morey should have waited until he knows how much Lin asks.
What about lin and dragic together in the backcourt? Not sure how it works salary wise, buy do you guys think they could co-exist? Same for lowry-lin backcourt.
i agree but i doubt the problem btw him and coach can be resolved. otherwise, morey won't be so desperate to turn to lin after the negotiation btw dragic and rox turned bad.
you can't. lin is a restricted free agent. knicks said again and again they will match any offer. what's the point to waste time and get nothing? even with the current reported offer, i am still not sure knicks won't match.
I like Morey and what he has done for this team as much as the next guy, but I can't even begin to imagine the fallout if we don't land any of Lowry, Dragic, or Lin - when they were all on the roster at the start of the previous year. Or even just a disgruntled Lowry remaining...would be very bad.
