Each team works with a salary cap as I am sure you know. The contract they Morey has offered Asik for example is paid out as 5m, 5m, and about 13m I believe. However, for what counts against our cap is only the total averaged out over the 3 years. This means that the cap number will be higher than the salary number in the first two years and lower in the third. The cap number from each player on your roster must be within the rules of the salary cap. For building your team the number that matters is the cap number.

The reason why backloading contracts for restricted free agents like Asik and Lin is a good strategy is because being the team that offers the contract our cap hit gets averaged out over the total contract. On the other hand, if the team decided to match out offer they are not allowed to use the average number for their cap hit, they MUST use the salary number as their cap number. That means in the 3rd year they would be paying the large number which would severely cripple their ability to put other players around them. Our advantage is we never have that restriction in building the team even though we are paying them the same amount salary wise.

Does that help at all or did I make it more confusing haha?

I like signing Lin. I think fans in Houston think we are entitled to a superstar after having dream and Yao. We are in a very good position right now with our collection of young talent.
All I want is our team to compete every night. We are not the bobcats.

Ah no, that's perfect. The only thing I didn't know was that the cap hit was the average. I read about earlier when there was a discussion on why it would be tough on Chicago to match Asik's offer. Thanks for your help!

No problem, I hadn't tried explaining it out to someone before so I wasn't sure if I would explain it well. Glad I was able to help.

With the amazingly obvious East Coast media bias ESPN rolls out daily, we might get a first hand look of just how bad it is. If we sign Lin and he plays like he did last year, will ESPN blow their **** about him again or will it go unnoticed. If he does it again as a Knick he will be labeled a Star all over the media. If he does it with Houston he will be just a up and coming player in ESPN's eyes.

the reported offer is 3 years 23 mil (5mil, 5.2mil, 13mil) backloaded (like Asik) that we plan on giving Lin... Is that starter money?

With the numbers of good young point guards out there, this will be slightly above average starter money.

People will go to the games strictly to watch Lin. Nobody gives a **** about Dragic. Personally, I like Dragic better, but then again my opinion means close to nothing.

This. But from what I understand the cap hits for us would be averaged. So if we offered Lin say a contract that pays him 5, 5, 15, the cap hit for that would still be 8M per year. OTH if NYC matches though they would have to pay 15M on the third year of their contract. As one other poster pointed out that will result in 130M total with taxes for 4 players, never mind the rest of the roster.

    *insert Morey pic here*

I like Dragic over Lin, but if Dragic wants 10M and Portland/Dallas offers that, then I'm fine with Lin for 8.

Anybody that says that Lin is only being signed because he is a "cash cow" is dumb. If that was the case the rockets would have never cut him in the first place. The kid can flat out play. But please don't let facts stop you.

The fact that you ranked Westbrook over tony parker and nash shows that you don't know what you are talking about. And Jason Kidd is a future HOfer so the fact that he is last says everything about you.

Chalmers isn't better. He is a good defender, can hit 3's and has that little floater. That is about it. Mario plays like a actual NBA player 1 game out of 5 and it just so happened the one good game he played it was against the knicks.
