I also hope they match. I don't see how this propels us forward - If we're going to tank, we should just tank. Resign Camby and keep my fingers crossed.

Yes, they do have to exactly match. Ironically, the cap room is spread out for the Rockets with the way the CBA works.

    Nope.

This particular structure is unique to players in Asik's situation -- 2nd round picks who only had 2 year contracts, outperformed them, and are restricted free agents. Hence the name, Gilbert Arenas Rule, though it also applied somewhat in Carlos Boozer's case (though he was the guy who the Cavs allowed to opt out because he said he'd resign to a long term deal, but then got bigger money elsewhere.)

The Rockets have always been wary of this scenario under Morey, which is why all of our 2nd rounders (Budinger, Dorsey, Parsons, etc.) have gotten 3-4 year deals. After 3 years, The Rockets can sign players to contracts starting up to the maximum salary, and thus this sort of poison provision does not apply.

You get them when you can get them, especially if you need them real bad.

As a point of clarification, this situation also applies to non-2nd round picks, such as Jeremy Lin who is still on the 2-year deal he signed with the Warriors and which the Knicks guaranteed in February?

We need a center. We got offense in bunches, we can afford to have a zero on offense as long as he brings rim protection. Anything offensive is gravy.

Yes, it does. Sorry I was generalizing -- the case of undrafted free agents commanding big dollar contracts is rare!

I dunno why you guys are hating on Asik. He's not an offensive dynamo but we already have a boat load of good offensive players: Dragic, Lowry, Kmart, Parsons, Scola etc. can all hit shots and put the ball in the hoop. What we need is paint protection, we need guys who will intimidate shooters and make the opponent offense work harder, so they'll be more tired when its their turn to defend.

I trust DM on his bigs analysis, I think he's earned it after getting guys like PP, Hill, Hayes and Scola, all of whom have proven to be competent players given the price we got htem.

Huh. Apparently the Bulls offered Asik a 4 year deal before he agreed to the Rockets offer.

I think the dude really wants to start.

If we release our rights to Lee to get Asik's contract drawn up, you now what would be the ultimate screw you?

A:The Bulls signing Lee and matching Asik.

He does want to start, but please note that the most that the Bulls offer could be is 4 years, $25 M, which is obviously worse for him than 3 years, $25M. It's one of these quirks of the Arenas Rule, which pretty much guarantees that high value "Arenas" free agents will sign an outside offer sheet.

Ignore him. He's the guy that thinks Asik and Roy Hibbert are in the same caliber. He also thinks Kyle Lowry is better than Rajon Rondo. lol

If they match on Asik we get the right to renew our rights to Lee.
