that makes a lot of sense... Orlando essentially got backed into a corner with the JJ deal yesterday. Leaking this to, the always reliable, Chris Broussard at the very least puts some pressure back on the bidders. good move from the rookie GM
Let's say: Lamb = Marshon Brooks Martin = Lopez / Humphries To match those 3 extra first round picks, we're probably talking White, Jones, and either Patterson or Motie. And I do think Orlando would have at least some interest in Brook Lopez. Yes, he averaged under 4 rebounds a game, but the guy only played 5 games this year. He also has shown he can play a full season and average a respectable 8.6 rebounds per game. The list of centers other than Brook Lopez who have averaged 18+ ppg in either of the last two seasons goes like this: Andrew Bynum Al Jefferson Andrea Bargnani (sort of) Dwight Howard If you extend that to other guys who can play center, you could arguably add: Kevin Love DeMarcus Cousins LaMarcus Aldridge (not really) David Lee (not really) Pau Gasol I think he's more valuable than Kevin Martin. Honestly, to beat the Orlando package, I think we would need to include all 3 picks this year, Martin, and probably 1-2 of Patterson, Morris, or Motiejunas, and/or take Hedo (but we'd have to give them Scola, to make salaries match, which may be unappealing). If BimaThug is right about us retracting our QO/bird rights on Courtney Lee, we'd have no 2 guards left, though we'd still have Lowry.
Those three first rounders are worthless. The Nets can't trade their 2013 first rounder, and so 2014, 2016, 2018 first rounders which will likely be 20 at best.
I agree with your point, but the Nets can trade their 2013 1st, as they don't owe any of their own future 1st rounders to other teams.

They traded their 2012 1st to Portland for G-Force, and they can't trade their first rounders in consecutive years.
1. Well, Lowry can be included as a trade piece, too. In fact, if you combine his salary with, say, Patterson, it's just enough to take on Hedo's contract. So, you can structure a deal with Lowry + Patterson for Hedo and Martin+Greg Smith (or any minimum wage player, really)+unsigned draft picks (any or all of Lamb, Motie, White, Jones) for Dwight. 2. Of course this would only make sense if the Rockets bring back Dragic. But if they do land Dwight and had to give up Lowry, I bet Morey is far more likely to increase his offer to Dragic. 3. I think you can manage to keep Lee if you sequence and structure the deals right in order to create space for Asik signing. You can always amnesty Scola, or find takers for Livingston, Brockman, Leuer and Morris.
good points, but it is hard to make an argument to the contrary without knowing how Orlando might rate prospects like Motie, White and Lamb. All three would be locked into rookie contracts as opposed to Lopez at the max. Houston is also better equipped to absorb some bad contracts from the Magic I don't think it's hard to poke holes in this "leak"...
As long as he stays East, I'm alright. As a Jerseyan, I'm glad to see both Nets and Knicks being good. I would have liked him to come here- but after the draft I realized it wouldn't happen.
2012 doesn't matter anymore though. The rule is about trading future draft picks in consecutive years. The 2012 draft has past and thus isn't a factor with regards to the Stepien rule.
So, it has to be six of the Nets own minor FAs (like Sheldon Williams, Larry Owens, Gerald Green, Armon Johnson, etc.). If so, can't another team blow this up by, say, signing Armon Johnson?
I suppose so. Are you suggesting that the Rockets should look into signing one of these guys? The problem of course would be that the Rockets won't have the necessary cap space to do so. Maybe you could work out a trade with a team interested in one of your minor assets and agree to a wink-wink deal, so that the team you're trading your minor asset to also agrees to sign one of these guys to a $2-3M deal or so. Spoiler Does that make sense?
Well, more than that, virtually any deal those guys sign would be subject to BYC. To match Hedo's contract by itself, they'd still need to string together about 7.8m in contracts. I suppose if Humphries made say 9.5m and Lopez 10m (with BYC), they could trade that pair for Howard, and Brooks + 4-6 guys totalling up around 6.4m, but it'd be tricky. For example, Shelden Williams only made 854k last year. He's a BYC player at anything over about 1.05m (nevermind bird right considerations, etc.) If they need 7.8m in contracts to receive in order to send away Hedo's 11.4m, they're only saving 3.6m anyway. Why doesn't Brooklyn just pay Orlando an extra 3m in cash, and toss in a 2nd round pick which they could probably sell for another 500k? Meanwhile, in 6 weeks or so (2 months after the Bucks trade), Houston could package Shaun Livingston, Patterson, Morris, and Smith/Simpson/Fortson, and Orlando would only be on the hook for about 4m for Patterson/Morris, and 1m for Livingston (if they cut him). That deal would save Orlando 6m on the Hedo contract. Obviously the Rockets only do this connection to a Howard trade (and Patterson/Morris are part of that haul), but something to consider.
Or can't it be blown up by one of those six FAs not wanting to sign for whatever contract is specifically created for the purpose of sending them to Orlando? I mean most of these guys are scrubs, but what if Sheldon Williams is like "ummm...nah man I don't want to sign for X dollars for one year to go to Orlando so they can cut me just so you can Dwight. I'm cool."
This is also contingent and all the Nets' FAs wanting to go to Orlando in a S&T. For that to happen, you'd have to think they'd all enjoy a premium in their deals. Magic want to overpay Lopez and Humphries to put them next to Anderson and an overpaid Glen Davis? That team would be terrible and still in cap hell. If Orlando really is going to do that deal, fine by me. So long as Howard doesn't end up in the West, I care a lot less about missing out on him.
They can have all 3 of our first rounders we drafted this year and those guys will be better than late 1st round picks the Nets will be sending
