Also it would certainly ensure Deron goes to the Nets with Dwight. Leaving Dallas forced to just rebuild as Dwight is really the last of the Big FAs until the younger guys get off their rookie deals.
I guess the new trade rules makes it possible for them to trade for Dwight and Hedo. The MLE is $5 mil. Easier to get paid, paid by saying yes to this.
They can, actually, if they sign Humphries and Lopez (free agents both) to big enough contracts. Interesting offer, actually. Those picks don't look like much right now (Dwight/Deron/Joe combo is good) but one of them gets hurt or gets old, they might turn into something. Not sure what kind of contract Lopez and Humphries would be getting. They are good players, but I wouldn't want to overpay them. But then again if you take Hedo (and others?) off Orlando's books, maybe the are not so bad for the Magic. Also, I think this might be why the Nets insisted that ATL takes back sufficient contracts for salary matching purposes so that the Nets are not using "cap room" to absorb Johnson's $-- if they were to use their own cap room, it would likely require renouncing Lopez and Humphries, who then cannot be traded (or signed ot a sufficiently large contract, really).
I'm surprised Cuban's team managed to win a 'ship. He's made so many bad decisions. Letting Tyson Chandler go might have prematurely ended the Dirk era.
If this goes down, I guess the world owes Billy King an apology. Trading the pick for Gerald Wallace looked idiotic at the time, but given this plan, they really could not have used cap room to sign Gerald Wallace this offseason. So, it worked out rather well, actually.
I'm a little confused by this....because my understanding is that this isn't possible because Brook Lopez would fall under BYC if the Nets tried to trade him. This would mean that he's 6 million, Marshon is 1 million, Humphries is probably 4 million give or take ( and maybe he would fall under BYC). That's around 11 million. Not enough to take Dwight Howard, and nowhere enough to take one of Orlando's bad contracts.
Humphries will make a lot more than 4 million. I think he made 8-9 last season. Also, in the new cba, you only have to be within 50 percent of the salary coming in.
Try 10M Humphries can get 10M I'm trying to crunch the numbers with Lopez and Humphries...I don't know how they are doing it without uthrowing a bag full of money at there feet and telling them to go to Orlando. Makes zero sense.
Humphries made 8m last year. He'd have to make greater than 9.5m to be a base year player. You are right that Lopez would fall under BYC if the Nets would be over the cap after signing him (and I don't see how they wouldn't given Wallace has resigned, Johnson takes up about 20m, and Deron Williams has a 17m+ cap hold before resigning; plus, they can't renounce Bird Rights to Humphries since they need to sign him, so you're at ~45+Humphries+Lopez+Brooks). Assuming they are over the cap, a deal with Humphries at 8.5m, Lopez at 9.75m, and Brooks at 1.2, would just barely work. Even if BYC player were not an issue, I don't see it a way for Turkoglu to be included. http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q81 Howard and Turkoglu combine for about 30.5m. That means, Lopez and Humphries salaries combined would have to total about 23.1m in the first year. I suppose you could make the 2nd or 3rd years non-guaranteed, and have the contracts decline in value, but that's a lot to pay for those guys.
If that were the case, if I were the Magic I would sign Lopez to a longer term deal and ask Humphries to sign for the maximum allowable for one year in order to make the Nets take the bad contracts. This would essentially let Humphries hit the jackpot one year while letting the Magic get rid of their bad contracts since the Nets are willing to do anything for Dwight.
Those first round picks Orlando will be getting will be virtually worthless. That big 3 is a top 5 team in the East as worst. Terrible trade for the Magic.
Ken Berger @KBergCBS [rquoter]Sources confirm discussions have resumed between the Magic and Nets about a trade that would send Dwight Howard to Brooklyn. The complicated scenario would involve the signing/trading of Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries, along with MarShon Brooks and 1st-round picks. The Brooklyn scenario isn't imminent, and it isn't the only one Orlando is working on, sources say. Orlando GM Rob Hennigan also trying to engage the Hawks, Rockets, Lakers and possibly Mavs in Howard talks. Full-court press.[/rquoter]
Here's the thing, though: If you trade for Lopez and Humphries as part of this package (instead of, say, Royce White, T. Jones, J. Lamb, plus an expiring Kevin Martin), presumably you value these guys as players rather than just possibly expiring contracts. So, having them for 1 year and then waiving them isn't really that great an option. And if you want them just to cut salary, then why not take back Kevin Martin + young pieces/picks instead? My guess is that it's in Orlando's best interest to make it at least look like the Nets have something possibly attractive to offer, so that the other "rental" teams could up their bid (maybe, say, Houston didn't want to take Hedo before hearing this).
KHump is a 6-7 mil guy. He got a 8 mil contract because it's a 1 yr deal. His numbers aren't better than Scola's.
Humphries made 8 million, but that was for one year. Landry made 9 million last year, and Dallas offered Tyson Chandler 20 million for one year, so those offers for one year are always artificially inflated. For a multiple year deal, Humphries should make a lot less, especially since he hardly did anything to impress like he did in the 2010-11 season and had that whole Kardashian mess. Maybe not 4 million, but a multiple year deal for him shouldn't really be above seven. And how does Lopez get to 9.75? My understanding of BYC is that it's half of what the resigned player will make in his first year, and there's no way Brook Lopez can even receive 19.5 million a year even if some team was willing to pay him that much, and no team would.
