I just discovered this. I'm not complaining but.....How is this a necessity? Reminds me of how old armies would consider tobacco a necessity for every soldier.
Its just a staple food, I think. It would be harder to legislate to not tax it. If you are going to not tax food it gets hard to pick and choose which you do and which you don't.
You don't get taxed on much of the actual food you buy at the grocery store unless it is already prepared (IE buying from the deli counter) or junk food/soda.
Ground coffee, you know, the 2 lb Folgers type. I understand staples like cheese, meat, veggies....but what amounts to a caffeinated drink mix?
I don't think the tax code really states that taxes on food are exempt for "necessities" or "staples"...just on less prepared, less processed foods.
