Solid move. Sounds like it will be very difficult for Bulls to match. Morey rings up another black mark around the league among his peers...but a solid move for the Rockets.

I'm not following you. Had they drafted Asik, they would be in Chicago's position of having to match (overpay) or lose him. Do you think Asik was this good in year one?

So, instead, Morey's method is to let CHI develop him and is buying him now that they know exactly what they are getting.

If we pay him 5-6Mil a yr, Bulls would match it for sure.

Yeah, most of you guys seem knowledgeable.

I can see why some of you would want Asik. When watching him with the Bulls, he seems to make a big impact.. mostly on the defensive end. But people have to understand that he was also out there with Noah, Deng, Brewer and Gibson for a lot of minutes. They're all great defenders that helped make Asik look good. When he was out there with a primarily offensive unit, he looked like a fish out of water... also meaning he flopped around haha.

I can see why the Rockets offered him that deal. They really want him and have more money to spend.

I just feel like the Bulls would be morons to match.

No. You always take a risk when drafting a seven footer who isn't first overall and (even then see: Oden, Kwame) there are hardly any to choose from. If there is a seven footer with ANY talent in the draft, that does ONE thing well he will be picked in the top 2 (see: Thabeet, blocks).

Centers that are not busts get paid when they hit free agency. That's common knowledge in the NBA.

I hope this doesn't give Morey the greenlight for a Gasol deal

So... are the bulls matching this offer or not? Seems premature to get excited about a guy that has a high chance of not even getting past this point.

The 3-year deal is about engaging Chicago in trade talks. I'd be willing to bet Hennigan values Asik. Been thinking about this. Morey will obviously take the guy for 3 years. But.....if he can get Chicago interested in a S&T deal for Omer, then he could possibly get Omer signed and traded to Orlando as part of the Dwight package. Hence, the 3-year offer. How do you get Asik to agree to be signed and traded to Orlando??? Simply offer him a 4th year.

this is how stupid this analysis is... thabeet in two seasons with rockets had a per 36 min avg of 9 blocks a game and 3.1 ..per 36 min thabeet is a better shot blocker than dwight howard .. in conclusion smart people do not look at per 36 (esp for players dont play a lot) as a point of comparison. that is like saying a player is on pace of over 100 homeruns after the first week of a season . good effort though

asik in two years has played in more games than thabeet, has more potential.

Doesn't sound like he thinks they'll match.

Last Asik Tweet (I think) of night: If Bulls match, they have $44-45 million committed to just 3 players in 2014-15. You picked the wrong group to talk about Thabeet... we saw what he could do (or in his case, could NOT do).

If what you say is true, wouldn't the Bull's defensive PPG go up when he took the court?

great point you would pay him the same amount if you drafted him or not ..so why draft a 7 footer and wait for them to develop, just wait for them to develop and then pay them

Point taken on being part of a very good defensive team, but his advanced stats on the defensive end are very good regardless.

It's widely known that the Bulls orginization really appreciates what Asik brings to the table.

I tell you, if Morey likes him this much, then it's got my attention and I'm in.

Doesn't seem like the Rockets have sufficient cap room to make this move; with all the new rookies, the Rockets can only offer 3 years, $19.9M.

Bima or CH, are my numbers wrong here? Seems like they'll need to cut $1.7M of salary to get to the $25M mark; perhaps Marcus Morris for a top-55 protected 2nd rounder?

Apologies on the ugly table, if anyone wants to clean it up for me it would be most appreciated.

Code:
Kevin Martin $12,439,675
Luis Scola $9,408,207
Kyle Lowry $5,750,000
Patrick Patterson $2,096,760
Marcus Morris $1,905,360
Jon Brockman $1,000,000
Courtney Fortson $762,195
Chandler Parsons $888,250
Greg Smith (Waived) $381,098
Rat Fisher (Waived) $644,005
Shaun Livingston (Waived) $1,000,000
Courtney Lee (Cap Hold, RFA) $5,562,733
Goran Dragic (Cap Hold, UFA) $4,005,200
Jeremy Lamb (Cap Hold #12 Pick) $1,683,500
Royce White (Cap Hold, #16 Pick) $1,519,400
Terrence Jones (Cap Hold, #18 Pick) $1,237,500
Donatas Motiejunas (Cap Hold, #20 Pick) $1,134,500
Total $51,418,383
Salary Cap (Assuming 2011-2012 Level) $58,044,000
Room Available $6,625,618
Total Compensation (Years x Cap Space) $19,876,853
Year 1 = Mid Level Exception $5,000,000
Year 2 = Mid Level Exception x 1.045 $5,225,000

yeah, and Bulls fans saw what Asik COULDN"T do. Asik is probably a worse offensive player than Thabeet. Thabeet is more athletic. Asik is just good at blocking shots.. mostly guards that drive in and don't see him.

And as I said in another post, Asik was out there at the same time as Brewer, Deng and Gibson.. 3 great defenders. Obviously Asik's defensive numbers will look good when he's out there with them.

When he was out there with rose, Boozer, Korver, our defense sucked. Asik made little to no impact.

It doesn't really matter if he worths 8 Mil a yr or not.

If we want him to be here, we have to overpay him.

Larry Coon's FAQ doesn't specify this, but it seems like if Chicago were to offer Asik a contract, they wouldn't be allowed to heavily backload the deal; they would be limited to standard 7.5% raises. As such, there is no financial incentive for Asik to be involved in a S&T; he'll make much more money by signing an offer sheet.

@BimaThug Based on current team salary, Rockets cannot make the Asik offer and still retain cap holds for both Dragic and Lee. Other moves coming.

@BimaThug Interestingly, Rockets have JUST enough for Asik offer if they waive Fortson and Simpson (most likely cuts anyway) & let Courtney Lee walk.
