They might as well trade Josh Smith, I don't see the reason to hold on to him, if he also wants to leave and if they can capture Gasol for him. Why not?
Was about to same the same thing. Joe Johnson + Gerald Wallace = two Hedo Turkoglu contracts by 2014 ...
They probably have a business model that is their foremost concern. They need name players going into their first year in Brooklyn. They probably feel like they need to capitalize on the excitement. Earn some goodwill with the fans and worry about the other stuff down the road. It is short-sighted if your goal is to win a championship, but may benefit the franchise financially (and ultimately on the court) down the road.
I don't think the fans will give a hoot about the Nets business model. Especially after when they look under their brand new spanking car to find used parts and used engines.
Fans don't, but the owner does. The last thing he wants to do is open his shiny new building with a 12-70 first year. Going young is the the best way to build a team, but may not be an option given to their GM (sound familiar?). My point was that people were criticizing them for being short-sighted. They may feel that they have to be short-sighted now and worry about building a true contender later. A team that starts with Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace and MarShon Brooks would excite a lot of fans.
I admire your ability to shine the turd that is the Nets roster management. Going from pursuing a star in Dwight Howard, who desperately have been wanting to join them, to managing themselves out of pursuing him completely, is indefensibly bad business model. This is the main sticking point.

Wait a minute. I read here on Clutchfans that Morey was the worst GM in the Universe. I'm getting confused.
Atlanta actually want talent back? If Atlanta misses the chance to dump that horrible contract on another team's hands because of Brooks, then they'd be even dumber than the NJ management.
co-signed Atlanta's window is closed if they where going to make any noise in the playoffs last year was the year to do it. My hope is this deal goes through and we offer the Hawks Kevin Martin to fill their void at shooting guard.
If the Atlanta GM is smart enough to find someone to take Joe Johnson he damn sure ain't taking Kevin Martin.
Joe Johnson went from underrated for a few years, to now vastly overrated, and a contract that nobody wants.
