People: It's called negotiations. You offer a price, you get a counter offer, other bidder offer, eventually a deal is reached with a team at a particular price. Why shouldn't Dragic and his agent ask for $10 million starting and see if they can get it? Knowing Morey, my guess is he'll be willing to pay market for Goran (unless such market price is totally irrational) but he's not going to pay $10 mil when the next highest bid is like $7 mil. Patience.
Not exactly, true. He didn't get a chance to as restricted free agent, while Cleveland was somewhat willing to pay him a little more, but opt out.
Morey made it clear they would match any offer for Lowry( so its a moot point) Lowry was simply going after a good deal, but he knew Morey would match 10 million for Gogi is crazy
Then why duh hell did Morey and McHale spent time so much with Dragic then? I feel like Morey and McHale told him to ask this much to scare team away. Once all the team lost interest, the Rox step in and pay him around Lowry's range
Maybe if he got us a win when we needed it to make the playoffs. I think Gogi needs a new agent. That could scare away teams who want his services, thus lowering what he gets in the end.
In the back of his mind, he probably knows that he won't make that much? Signing with a different team won't guarantee him a starting spot?
Offer him seven per, five flocks of sheep, two dozen goats, and one prized dairy cows. Take it or leave it.
Exactly Gogi knows he will be the starter here( and thats what he wants ultimately). Wouldnt be suprised if this 10 million talk is just lip service from his agent
Funny how people start accusing Dragic of being a traitor because he wants to get paid the most he can get in the market for his services. This is called being a rational economic actor. Same thing Morey is doing. Same thing every team does (except for the stupid ones). If there is a chance that some team might step up and offer him $10 million starting salary, why not ask for it and see what happens? Maybe you get such an offer. Maybe you get a little less. Maybe you get a lot less. But there's no down side to asking.
Give him Mario Williams old house and get him a 60in Samsung LED 3D TV for his room AND living room
If most agree he's not worth $10 mil, then what do people think he's worth? Lowry makes $5,750,000. I'd pay Dragic around $6.5 mil. Maybe $7, but then I'd consider just keeping Lowry. The new salary cap makes every player worth less money. There are some crazy-bad PG contracts out there now: Calderon $10.5, Jameer Nelson $7.8, Udroh $7.2. But these types of contracts won't be given out anymore.
Morey is probably offering closer to MLE $5M. Sending out that $10M figure, teams are more likely to make starting offers in between those numbers.
Doubt it. If you are a team that's willing to offer Dragic $8 million. Goran's agent saying "We are looking for $10 million" won't stop you from offering the $8 mil and seeing what happens. They didn't say "Goran won't take 1 cent less than $10 million or he's going back to Europe!" or something. Goran is represented by BDA Sports. They have a lot of NBA clients, including Steve Nash and Yao Ming. These guys know what they are doing.
