I was afraid that might be the case. He'd better develop one, because in the NBA, it won't be as easy to get to the rim like he does in that video. Just as Terrence Williams. Still, even in a Youtube video, the guy oozes energy.
I hate hearing about how Royce is like T-Will. They are nothing alike. T-Will is a ball stopper with no clue of how to play within a system. Royce can play within a system.
So let me sum up everything: Strengths: -upper body strength/tank-like build -Versatile scorer (can score on isos, post-ups, hand-offs, back to basket, face up etc. basically every way that doesn't involve a puill up jumper) -court vision/bball IQ -handles -advanced low post scorer -intangibles (put all off-court issues behind him, workout warrior) Weaknesses: -shooting (ouch!) -lateral quickness (double ouch!) -perimeter defense (triple ouch!) -turnover prone/lacks discipline or focus Meh: -rebounding -athleticism -height/length Summary: I don't know what to make of Royce White. His skillset makes him a mismatch nightmare at PF but at only 6'8 I dunno if he'll be better than PPat, DMO, Scola or even Terrence Jones, much less premier PFs in the league. I guess if push comes to shove he can be a 6th man "gimmicky" PF like Mandry, Diaw, Lewis or any other with exotic skills, but considering how unique his skillset is I'm hoping for more. My ideal scenario for White is transitioning into the SF role, his handles and low post scoring skills remind me of Melo/Pierce. Sure the same thing applied to Morris, but the thing with Morris is he didn't have the advanced handles this kid has, and his attitude seemed to have rubbed Mchale the wrong way and he got outplayed by Parsons. To be an effective SF though he needs to work on his shooting and his lateral quickness, all scouting reports are saying he's extremely slow laterally and he struggles defending on the perimeter, and of course that shot is just plain broken as well. I'm hoping he puts in the work and transforms into the power SF we need, I would be really disappointed if he ended up as another role player PF.
For his size he's athletic, but will have to get more athletic in the NBA. I know he has been working on that since getting knocked out of the NCAA tournament. Rebounding though is pretty decent.. @Michigan: 13 rebounds @Texas A&M: 18 rebounds (triple double game) @Kansas: 17 rebounds (vs. Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withey) @Texas: 15 rebounds vs. K-State: 12 rebounds @Baylor: 11 rebounds (vs. PJ3, Quincy Acy, Quincy Miller) vs. UCOnn: 13 rebounds (vs. Andre Drummond and Alex Oriake) vs. Kentucky: 9 rebounds (vs. Anthony Davis, Terrance Jones, MKG) Not to mention a 16 rebound performance against Providence and others. He had at least 10 rebounds 15 times last season, and at least 8 rebounds 24 times. Not bad for someone who started the season out with not even playing a real game for 2 years.
Sounds to me like McHale would install analternative point forward system just for him if the final roster shakes out with playing time for the rookie. It might be a plan for 2013 though because it will be hard enough just to get all those new guys comfortable with the standard offense.

We have several 4s on the team that can stretch the field and hit their open jumpers...maybe White can play the 3 and post his guy up and either exploit a miss match or pass to the open guy. It all comes down to him being able to defend 3s and to him being able to hit open shots. If he can do that we have ourselves a winner. But way too many talents on this team right now. We should be 2 deep at every position, but right now we should have 2 PGs, 3 SGs, 3 SFs, 4 PFs and 1 C ( not counting the players we traded for because Idont think they will make the team). So we should try to get rid of one SG ( prefably Martin because of his salary and his age and because he should be able to help a contending team) one SF (Morris? I doubt any team would want him based on him not coming of our bench - but Parsons and White should be save) 2 PF ( Moti is not going anywhere, Scola would be usefull as a veteran presence, but he is expendable, PPat and Jones could be trade bait) and get another, preferably starting C. So the main question is : can we trade Martin, Scola and two young forwards and get not much more than a C and maybe draft picks back? Maybe also trade Lowry and get another PG? We have too many players and I don't see yet, how Morey will fix that...
This may have been said, but after watching his interview on Rockets.com this dude is the Rockets version of Arian Foster personality wise. Hopefully he can have the same impact as Foster.
This is from the Cap City League in Des Moines. Bunch of college guys (and a few good HS players). This is a league Harrison Barnes played in too during summers. It's from 10 days ago, and the guy on the other team, Craig Brackins, is on the 76ers. He drains two 3-pointers here and has some nice passing (especially the last one). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6f5not36X8 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Y6f5not36X8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> By the way, one of the guys in this vid, Will Clyburn, had even more pro upside than White according to many NBA scouts at the beginning of last season. Keep on eye on him next year
I'm only going by the online videos, but I can see the comparison in terms of style of play: good passers/ball handlers, the ability to get into the lane, suspect outside shooting. A power forward with Williams's skillset isn't a bad thing. If White can establish his abilities at the NBA level, develop an outside shot and play within the system (things Williams have yet to do), he should be fine.
how strong is 29 reps of 185lbs in terms of nba pf standards? we know that it's the best by any new draft coming in but the nba is a different animal. will he be able to bully elite level pfs?
He is not super fast, but he actually explodes towards the rim...Stutter step is sweet...but his ability to put a pass on a dime...is what will make him a keeper with the Rockets...
No idea, cant find any stats on it, but being the strongest to ever come in can't be a bad thing. Especially when you have 10 reps on the next closest person.
I think Royce White gives the Rockets a second player after Scola that can command a double-team in the post. That was what we lacked last year, and why we had to play that Scola-Patterson lineup - basically Scola to command a double team (but with suspect D & poor rebounding), and Patterson to space the floor for an 18-ft jump shot (except he lost his shooting touch and also athleticism for rebounds, and plays positional D without much shot blocking ability). I think Royce White will eventually make Scola expendable, as he will probably draw a better double-team, can pass better, draw much better mismatches, rebound better, and is just so much more versatile. If he plays defense hard, should at least be no worse than Scola. White should play the 4, not the 3, as his mismatch potential is high at both positions on offense, but his defensive liability should be less on D at the 4 (he can keep PFs out of the lane better with his strength and force them into jumpshooters, but he can't keep up with the slashers). This is why I don't get why people didn't like us picking two more PFs. This was the most easily addressable weakness at 16/18 in the draft. You can't be saying White doesn't have more upside than Scola as a facilitator on offense with less flaws in his game, or that Terrence Jones doesn't have more two way potential than Patrick Patterson at the same height with more athleticism.
dudes very mature, mature nba ready body, I say this guy will come in and turn heads, sleeper of the draft
