Sort of like smoking companies acknowledging that smoking causes lung cancer. They shout the threat down until they can figure out how they will still be able to make a profit, and then and only then they acknowledge the problem. Of course this admission doesn't mean that he is acknowledging the scope of the problem. I guess that is the next step. And once we get there we will all be able jump to the next step, to say, "yeah it's a problem, but we can't do anything about it."

You can only keep facts out for so long.

Nicholas Gregory "Greg" Mankiw (play /ˈmæn.kjuː/; Ukrainian Cyrillic: Григорій Манків; born February 3, 1958) is an American macroeconomist and Professor of Economics at Harvard University.

From 2003 to 2005, Mankiw was chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President George W. Bush. In 2006, he became an economic adviser to Mitt Romney and continued during Romney's 2012 presidential bid.

It doesn't matter. China & India refuse to cut back emissions because their populations are huge. Americans love CO2, and developing countries are just starting to modernize, let alone have clean infrastructure. I'd say humanity will wake up when there's massive flooding- but drowning Polynesia & Bangeldesh has little effect.

It's tough to accomplish anything when the entire GOP resist every single plan he introduces, preferring to stall the economy (and progress) in the hopes of defeating him in November.

Well, I'd agree with that analogy if virtually everyone in the U.S. was a smoker and had no realistic intentions of living in a world without it.

The developed world has spoken and they've said "yeah it's a problem, but we aren't willing to do anything about it yet."

The debate about climate change is not whether it is happening or not; the debate is whether it is good or bad. However, people on both sides of the debate are so perverted that they cannot disguinsh between connotation and cause; further evidence of human kinds' egocentric thinking.

The engineering options equal New Orleans, applied to every urban coastline of the planet.

The PRC is actually taking the lead in addressing climate change. While they are a huge part of the problem they also are not putting their head in the sand but acknowledging the problem.

As far as massive flooding in Polynesia and Bangladesh we area already contending with problems on the US East Coast.

The big problem with dealing with Climate Change is that we might be so far down it though that the only solution is a major engineering solution.

I am not a big fan of geo-engineering but in a few years that might be the only way we can address the problem.

Don't you think we are getting way ahead of ourselves by assuming we know enough to engage in geo-engineering? If we knew how to geo-engineer, wouldn't we be able to predict the "tipping point" far more accurately?

People have to lose money to improve the environment. Until individuals and legal entities are forced to make dramatic changes, no one is going to buy into it, and those who stand to lose the most will pour money into distorting public perception.

Yes I agree that it is very questionable that we do know enough to completely control geo-engineering. In fact we have basically been running a vast geo-engineering experiment by dumping tons of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere already. That is why I said I am not a big fan. The problem though is that things like climate change could be so far along that there isn't a way to address but through geo-engineering.

I still have some faint hope that we can come around to switching to renewables and greater conservation to address climate change and other energy related problems but that hope is getting fainter and fainter.

Accurate. Stopping all anthropogenic CO2 production now would still result in much of the predictions coming true.

But relying on technology is fraught with risks.

the arrogance in thinking we're alone in this universe is only equaled by the arrogance in thinking that this planet has no say in global warming.

some of you humans are getting too big for your pants in the universe's eyes.
