Pretty amazing. Only 5 years and, despite what seemed like overhype in Job's address....really did change the way we do things. The intro of smart phones and web browsing on the phone:

RIM's lack of awareness is pretty astounding. Google recognized the kind of impact the iPhone was going to have and changed their upcoming OS accordingly. RIM though, seemed as though it was just in disbelief while Apple and Google passed them by. They will be hard pressed to recover now. Microsoft woke up before they did.

But yeah, the iPhone had a huge impact on the industry and really did alter the cell phone market. Watching that keynote now is pretty interesting.

I might knock Apple's ability to change the wall of icons and boring interface and fisher price wooden textures/denim jean textures but Apple did pave the way for the modern smartphone and I am definitely grateful for that.

not sure about the date discrepancy from chow's graphic....but lots of sources saying today was the day....

    http://www.businessinsider.com/ipho...ersary-five-things-that-sucked-in-2007-2012-6

Five things that sucked per above:

    no app store
    EDGE network
    Dropped calls
    Cost
    iPod comparisons.

The keynote is a long...but very cool watch. I'm on a blackberry contract for one more yr. UGH. If only my blackberry today approached what the iphone of 5 years ago could do!

I've had each of the iPhones. I still prefer the size/feel of the first generation. I am not an Apple fanboy in any sense of the word. I do all my business/personal/pleasure(!) computing on various non-Apple PCs. The iPhone just really works for me.

Can't believe it's been that long already. Crazy...

I'm the opposite. I can't believe it's *only* been 5 yrs given the impact it's had on how we do so much!

5 years...and I still generally loathe the touchpad. Sigh.

for all the android vs ios vs wp fanboism (which I am guilty of) it is actually a great thing that android has caught up with ios and wp is on its way. It means more competition which leads to more innovation.

I wonder what the name of that APP that shows the iPhone's screen on the projector is called... and if it's a commercial thing...

I'd like to use that for teaching someone how to use an app I've developed, or something else... like how to do various things on there...
    That's what SHE said.

Just think how it would be if Apple and Verizon had reached an agreement and the iPhone wasn't exclusively AT&T for so long. The landscape now would be completely different.

The iphone 4S looks antiquated -- it will be interesting to see how much they change for the 5.

Smartphones are just the offspring of PDA + phone. I don't think the iPhone was the first one either. Didn't Palm and Microsoft already have smartphones out? Given, they weren't GREAT, but certainly was the start of what we have now.

Or is my history messed up?

Blackberry is still extremely popular in certain parts of the world. But yeah.

Alexander Graham Bell can get all the credit if we go down that road.

Microsoft didn't invent the GUI OS but they are the main reason computers are a part of most offices and households.

Apple didn't invent the smartphone but they are largely responsible for why many of us have one in our pocket.

Same goes for the iPad and tablets.

And w/ Surface Microsoft may be responsible for converging all these things even quicker than Apple even though they didn't have a great track record in the early days. Time will tell.

Everyone has great ideas but making them come to fruition is reserved for the few who follow through. Credit to the inventors, but also credit those who make these a real part of our lives.

There is an old saying that I find appropriate.

Pioneers get slaughtered but settlers thrive.
