I can't remember if I posted this link in this thread or in another, so I will post again. This article interviews coaches, family, and Royce and goes into great detail about his anxiety disorder and the obstacles that he had to overcome. He talks about his transfer out of both one High School and U of Minnesota. Seems to be a really bright kid with a lot going for him and am happy to have him on this team. He does talk quite a bit about how the "fear of flying" rap got blown out of proportion. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8096247/on-road-nba-draft-prospect-royce-white
How many 6'8 pfs make the asg who are not explosive? If you start in the last 10 yrs,you can come up with david west and zach randolph. Zach has incredibly long arms,so now we're to david west who made it 1 time playing with chris paul. I think at that position, being small hurts the player as much as anywhere on the court. I recognize his handles and he's strong, but until he all the 4s in the league are strong. Then we haven't even talked defensively. How is he gonna challenge shots?
leeb, He is very explosive. If you watch any of his videos it's appearant that explosiveness is a strength. One second tour in front of him and the next he is past you and 10 feet up the court. As I said earlier it's deceptive because he pics his spots to turn it on. I am concerned defensively. I'm not sure he's a good defender outside of the paint. We will see though.
I think you missed my entire point with bringing up guys like David West and Zach Randolph. The point wasn't to compare them to Royce White. The point was to make a point about how frivolous it is to judge a draftee by what position he was drafted in, before he's ever even shown up to camp. You might have a point if we were talking about one of the foreign guys drafted in the late 2nd round being a potential franchise player. I would probably call BS on that. To say though that because he was 16th overall, he doesn't have the potential to do that? The guy has legitimate top 10 talent and almost every expert agrees with that. The only reason he wasn't a lottery pick was because of his highly publicized anxiety issues. He obviously needs work to be "that guy" but he definitely has the potential. His potential is through the f'ing roof, it's not even funny. He's already there physically except for his speed versus NBA guards and a few other special talents (i.e. LeBron). He has quickness, and he has speed against most forwards in the NBA, but he's not going to beat LeBron down the court unless he works on it...which by the way, he has been in the off season, not to mention his jumper. He was really the best player on the court vs. Kentucky. AD had a decent game, but White had an even better game. He also put up a triple double, which no player in Big 12 play had done since 2006 (Curtis Stinson of ISU), and he almost put another triple double up against Thomas Robinson.
That's an unfair comment. Are you implying that you can not be high on a draft pick and defend his strengths with out that player being your all time favorite player? Would it be safe to say that you are very narrow minded?
From probasketballtalk... http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports....es-fear-of-flying-shouldnt-ground-nba-career/
Actually no. He's in my top 15 maybe..definitely not my favorite of all time. There are many guys who've played in the NBA I love more.
He's also not even my favorite ISU player of all time, maybe top 5 though. I'm defending the guy because he's legitimately good and legitimately has a very high ceiling he can realize. He might not, he might..we'll have to see.
The reason we made the Dalembert trade for the 12th was because we wanted Lamb and believed Phoenix was set to pick. We had to leap frog PHO to get Lamb. I'm sure Clutch can verify this.
The Rockets need to work his fear of flying into their promos for this season. Think the A-Team with White as BA, Dragic as Face, Scola as Murdoch and McHale as Hannibal. The team can come up with new and clever ways to drug or render White unconscious as he screams "I ain't gettin on no plane foos!!!".
Not trying to be a downer, but I can't help but think how awesome Royce White would look... running Rick Adelman's motion offense out of the high post like Chuck Hayes used to. I'm having a little more trouble trying to envision him tearing it up in a PnR based scheme. Perhaps I'm missing something, which is entirely possible. The other thing I'm thinking is he's really going to have to hit the jumper. Otherwise NBA 4's will have enough sense to just sag way off him, and all the quickness and passing ability in the world will be useless.
I wasn't trying to offend the guy or be narrow minded. He just has an incredible amount of knowledge in regards to White and seems to follow/know more about him than a pro-scout even.
I'm an ISU alum and watch a lot of basketball. He was our best all around player this year and was hard not to notice everything he did. I'm actually about in the average of ISU fans, honestly. We are very passionate about our sports teams. It's not even basketball season and look how active our message board is: http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/mens-basketball/ He's not my favorite player though, or even my favorite ISU has produced. I liked Jamaal Tinsley and Curtis Stinson more.
You guys do realize that Royce White is not going to have the ball in his hands nearly as much on a pro level, right? He will have to find a way to be effective off the ball. DD
Watch his games. He was doing things to get guys open even when he didn't have the ball. Even on things like a ball handoff. He would just back down 2-3 defenders at once (no joke) to leave the guy with the ball open for a wide open shot. He did that quite a bit. I think it's semi misleading to say we lead our offense through White. He did bring the ball up a number of times, but Scott Christopherson, Chris Allen, and Bubu Palo did just as much if not more than Royce White did. Usually when White did bring the ball up the court, most of the time he handed it off or passed to someone else. vs. Oklahoma - 3 points. ISU still scored 77 points. vs. Texas Tech - 7 points, ISU still scored 76 points. vs. Rice - 6 points, ISU still scored 90 points. vs. Oklahoma - 4 points, ISU still scored 80 points.
I noticed that while watching his highlights. The way he hands the ball off and then creates a shield for his teammate to shoot an open 3-pointer is amazing. I don't see people do that and he does it quite often and very effectively.
Somebody in another thread mentioned Patterson is now our starting center. I'm saying if we didn't adjust our roster by Dec 1 (which we will), that I would run White out there as my starting pivot. He's a bigger, stronger, more offensively talented Chuck Hayes with the same low base as Hayes and the ability to be a great post up defender.
