A Houston-bashing thread. Where is Baqui99? I'll go with the organization. Players know if they come here, they'll most likely be traded within 2 years, so what's the point? Playing for the Rockets is like having a layover on the way to your final destination. Most people would rather just fly non-stop.
this is nonsense, dallas numbers rely heavily on the population of ft. worth, ft worth is useless, as is arlington, theres nothing you can do in dallas that you cannot do in houston. when comparing cities, houston is larger than dallas, and has a more centralized metro based around one large city.. while dallas metro is larger but spread out among several medium cities comparing san antonio to houston is laughable, they have the alamo and a river walk, BFD. their metro is 2 million, theres more people in Houston city limits then there is in SA's entire metro.. thats why they can only support 1 sport..
and any idea that players dont want to come here based on some silly metro statistics, or some opinion that houston cant offer big city amenities is ludicrous.. there are 3 cities that offer a spotlight that others cant offer, its new york, chicago, and los angeles. thats it.. dallas, miami, houston, atlanta, boston, philly are all pretty much even playing field. do you think lebron and bosh go to the heat if dwayne wade isnt already established there..
You guys are crazy if you think Houston is viewed in the same light nationally as Dallas and Miami. Crazy.
No one want to go play with losers. And we are losers. When we had Yao - T-mac & Artest were happy to come here. When Yao was hurt - Artest bolted for L.A. When we had Hakeem - lots of people listed Houston as a destination. Steve Francis was happy to come here because of that. It's the organization and the chances to win that matter to these players. You didn't see people clamoring to play for the Clippers. Kobe didn't say, I iwll only play in L.A. - he said he'd only play for the Lakers. That's why it's foolish to try to get a star player through trade. No one wants to be frustrated with losing. Got to play the draft to get that first star, and keep cap space open to sign the 2nd.
It sure doesn't help when Houston sports radio personalities (many of whom have been imported from New York) talk about what a crummy place Houston is, and how no one would want to be here.
I think its a combination of us not having any stars and player's agents advising players what rout to take.
B.S. the rockets never had this problem when they had good players and cd at the helm. Whatever direction you want to take it, that's up to you. Players love the city and that's why so many stay here who don't even play here. Penny had a house in houston and never played here. Shaq did too,but that was his childs mother thing. Mcdyess was here also before he was a free agent and almost signed here. I've stated this in the past and posters told me to prove it in terms of talking about morey. We know how mcgrady saga ended,but guys around the nba talk about a lot of stuff regarding franchises. They also see how adelman was kinda forced out and in general how guys are shuffled in and out. Now,it wuldnt be as big of a problem if the rockets had a great player and that great player was walking or being the tonesetter for the franchise,but the rockets don't have that luxury. As a result,morey is the face of the franchise and I don't think that's a good thing when you're trying to basically recruit players.

Name one NBA star who was able to win without a great supporting cast or future HOF, the only ones that come to mind are Rick Barry and Hakeem Olajuwon.
Guys want to play with other great players so they have a chance to win rings. We don't have a star and these current players are not the alpha dog type that think they will win a ring no matter where they play. If they were guys like Lebron, Dwight Howard, and Derron Williams wouldn't be running from the teams that drafted them to play with other all stars.
umm their main core, Durant, Harden, Ibaka and Westbrook are all in house talent. What big name free agent has chosen to go there? To the people who say it has nothing to do with the city are false. The city itself plays a big role. The TEAM, the Knicks, have sucked ass for the longest. But that doesn't stop guys from wanting to come play in the CITY of New York. I'm with AB. We need to build through the draft and create our own in house talent like we did with guys like Hakeem, Yao Ming, Andre Johnson, ect.
Ya it's all about who you have here. Most recent example, Fisher (I know, not huge talent). Houston is no good, but OKC is juuuust fine. T-Mac with Yao already here. Drexler with Dream already here. You have to have an attractive TEAM first, the city is just a bonus or not at that point.
The city Houston is not the problem, it is on the owner. Dallas Mav. was very bad untill Cuban purchased the team, then the story is totally different. Dallas is better for a NBA team? I have lived in Dallas before, I know Houston is better overall.
