My disapointment is not that they drafted lamb in front of henson, but the fact that I think they could've gotten henson and lamb. I would've really like to see mchale work with an athletic, long big who has a high bbiq like henson. To me, drafting henson would've made it easier to play morris at the 3 and do-nuts at the 5. Henson has great pedigree too and I think he's going to be better than both jones and white. I always worry about guys coming in with a nba body like royce and jones. In college when sheer strength looks better than in pros, I proceed with caution. I guess we will see how this thing plays out.
3. It was out of control... most mock drafts weren't even close. That shows how unpredictable this draft was. MJ's Bobcats screwed everything with the MKG pick. A follow-up was the unbelievable pick of Waiters at 4, which put the nail in the coffin. Consequently, teams had players available that they never imagined would be there and decided to take their picks rather than trade. Overall, we got some solid picks and we did the best we could do with the hand that was played.
Yeah, people are going overboard, but I think this is sunshine bs. 1. I'm so tired of this two to tango excuse. The counterparty will tango if the price is right. So what nobody else made a trade. We needed it more than anyone else and tried harder than anyone else and didn't get it done. And we even cashed in on Budinger and Dalembert to set up for trades last night. I doubt McHale is happier to go to camp with another undersized power forward instead of Budinger. 2. Yeah, we still have the offseason and all, but draft night represented probably the best chance we had of doing something significant. That's when the draft picks are still liquid. Now we have to find a counterparty who is interested in our particular rookies. And, it was also the last opportunity to trade Lowry before we give Dragic an offer. Is he going to accept a contract with Lowry still there when someone like Portland is offering money and a clear starter's spot? They can promise to trade Lowry but hey, you know, it takes two to tango, right? They might not find a trade partner, Goran. So yeah, it's not the end of the story. But, it was a huge opportunity lost and a big blow to the franchise's rebuilding. They'll make moves. But, the chance of a transformational move this offseason just shrank enormously.
I don't think it was possible though. Seems like the Suns were set on Lamb, their fans even think Houston moved in front of the Suns just because of this fact. The Suns were mocked to take a SG for most of the year as well, Lamb (as odd as it is and as wrong as it is) was the last really good one left (and to some the best SG in the draft class) but I think they had to take Lamb at 12 because he doesn't slip to 16.
I don't understand all the fuss people are making. We may not have drafted the exact player you wanted, but we drafted probably the best player (or maybe 2nd best, depending) left with each pick. Like the OP said, no big trades were done. It's not like we were sitting around with our thumb up our ass. You're delusional if you actually thought we were going to get Howard on draft night (or, ever, for that matter). None of the PFs we currently have are the set in stone PF of our future. If a PF is the best available at the pick, and you think he could be better than what we have, you take him. Trades are always an option.
There is no playing time for 5 rookies to develop. Having to take 3 players was a failure to execute on Moreys part. DD
Plan A doesn't work =/ Failure. Don't you design video games? Is it a failure everytime you have to change a code or something?
Ya there is. We're gonna trade Martin, Lowry, and Scola. James Harden played 22-23 mins a game in his first 2 seasons. They can split up the time.
YOu make a good point that there is still time to tool the roster. I imagine that is going to happen. The problem is that a draftee's value is the highest its going to be for 12 months on draft night. Jeremy Lamb's value goes down from now until the point at which he shows he can play in NBA games. Same for White and Jones. On draft night, a team might trade for a player because they want him and there is urgency to acquire him and SOMEONE is going to get the player. Now, all the players are drafted and things settle down...
Exactly Carl, they are not going to go into the season with this much rookies. Montiejunas Morris (which they probably consider a rookie) Lamb White Jones Llull I'd say three, if not 4 of these won't be here by opening night. Now, which one would you keep and develop?
So it is okay to sell the farm as long as we move up. Thats crazy and I am glad DM didn't do anything stupid just to make a move on a project center. Even tho I wanted Drummond or Leonord, they were both projects and not worth trading all of are (dear I say it) Assets for one of them. I see Gasol in or future which actually isn't that bad of a deal. Scola, Klow, Terrence Jones, Jon Brockman, and Dallas's protected 1st for Gasol and a second round pick.
If Zeller doesn't go at 17 and we grab him at 18, we are raving about what an awesome draft this is. Someone had to come up to 17 to get in front of him and overpay to do it.
I was so happy we didn't take Zeller or Meyers. It was the one encouraging thing about the draft. You can find guys on the FA market who will play at or above the level of Zeller and Meyers next year. On top of that the ceiling of those two guys is low. Zellers already got post moves. Didn't help him dominate NCAA any better. So why pick somebody with a low ceiling out of need when you can get a guy like White who has a chance to change the course of your franchise over the next five years? I only said chance, not that he definitely would, but if you dont pick these guys ever then you'll never have any chance at all, period.
